Soccer Mocs play to scoreless draw

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team battled Eastern Kentucky University to a scoreless tie Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium.

The Colonials (0-1-1) - who shared the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season championship last year - and Mocs (1-0-1) combined for seven shots on goal. But there were only a couple of really dangerous opportunities throughout the course of a match that featured more almost chances than actual ones.

"They are really organized and tough to break down," UTC coach Gavin McKinney said. "They're intelligent when they go forward with their movement. Overall, I thought it was a really even game, chances on both sides.

"Maybe a draw is accurate."

UTC's Jordan Mueller - who scored twice in Friday's season-opening 3-2 win over Austin Peay - had a pair of shots on goal and four attempts total, including a breakaway she fired directly at EKU keeper Anna Hall. Freshman forward Chloe Arnold had the other shot on goal on three total attempts, but other than that, the majority of the match was a possession fight between the two teams deliberately looking for opportunities.

Another UTC attempt, a header by Catherine Meyer off a McKenzie Gregg corner kick, sailed just wide.

"We competed really well together," Arnold said. "The heat kind of killed us, but we pushed through. I think that us doing that showed real resilience as a team. They were a tough side, but I think we played really well against them. We came out with a tie, so we're still undefeated and that's exciting."

The Mocs' next three matches are on the road: against Radford on Friday, Elon next Sunday and UT-Martin on Sept. 1. Their next home match is Sept. 3 against Morehead State before a six-game stretch of road matches that spills into Southern Conference play.
