University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Jordan Mueller is the first Southern Conference women's soccer player of the week for the 2017 season. Mueller had two goals and an assist in the Mocs' 3-2 season-opening win over Austin Peay, and four of her six shots in two games have been on goal. She made the SoCon all-freshman team last year as a center midfielder.

Cross Country

* Lee University was picked by Gulf South Conference cross country coaches to win both the men's and women's championships in 2017. The Lady Flames, voted first for the second year in a row, got 158 poll points to 153 for defending GSC champion Union University. Montevallo was third with 147. "Our women put in a lot of work last spring. Every woman on our team dropped a significant amount of time," coach Caleb Morgan said in a Lee release. "After getting second two years in a row, our women are poised to win this year." The Lady Flames return most of their 2016 team, including GSC individual champion Audrey Smith and Audrey Carpenter, who joined her in the top 10 in the NCAA South Regional. Lee got all 12 first-place votes in the 2017 men's poll, good for 144 points to second-place Alabama-Huntsville's 131. The Flames return Harold Smith, Seth Eagleson and Christian Noble from the top five of the 2016 conference meet as they won their second consecutive team title. They also won the South Region meet.

Basketball

* Sewanee women's basketball coach Tracey Braden announced Tuesday the hiring of assistant coach Alyssa Visbeen, a former Williamson County player of the year at Brentwood Academy who lettered four years at Belmont and scored 740 points for the NCAA Division I school. She was second-team All-Atlantic Sun Conference and made the All-Ohio Valley Conference team after the Bruins changed affiliations. "Alyssa is a great addition to our staff. Her energy is evident every day, and her enthusiasm for the sport of basketball is contagious," Braden said in a Sewanee release. "She is a worker and already making great connections on the recruiting trail."

Tennis

* More volunteers would be welcome for the USTA Mixed Doubles State Championship this weekend in Chattanooga, beginning Thursday with packet pickup and setup for a player party. Areas Friday through Sunday where help is needed include the registration desks at the Champions Club and Baylor School and "runner" roles between sites or to pick up lunch for workers. If interested email Bliss Causby at chattvolunteers@gmail.com.

General

* The Chattanooga Quarterback Club will begin its 2017-18 schedule of weekly noon luncheon meetings Monday at a temporary new location. Because of work being done on the sprinkler system at the Stadium Club at Finley Stadium, the club will meet at Spring Hill Suites at 495 Riverfront Parkway. New UTC football coach Tom Arth will be the guest speaker Monday, reviewing the Mocs' season opener against Jacksonville State and looking ahead to the LSU game and the rest of the season. Attendance costs $12 with a meal this year, still $4 for anyone not eating, but anyone planning to eat should email that intention to Marshall.Harvey@elliottdavis.com so the hotel's caterer can have an estimate before Monday.
