Around the Region: Central reveals seven hall of fame inductees

The Central High School Sports Hall of Fame ceremony on Sept. 15 will honor Tom Cole (1983 graduate), Arnold Davis (1948), Charlie Glenn (1963), James Hale (1951), Kip Henley (1978), Paul Potter (1953) and Matt Shelton (1988) as new inductees. The event begins with a $5 barbecue dinner at 5:30; the ceremony is set for 6:15 before the 7:30 football game against East Hamilton. Tickets are available at the school, through Judy Phillips at 503-7413 or at the door. Glenn and Cole are being inducted for football, Davis for baseball and football, Potter for baseball and basketball, Henley for golf, Shelton for track and field and Hale as a football, baseball and basketball coach.

Soccer

» The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women lost 4-1 at Elon on Sunday. Chloe Arnold's conversion on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Mocs (1-2-1) gave up a goal 11 seconds later and the Phoenix (3-1) notched their final score in the 89th minute. UTC was limited to four shots overall and just one on goal, while those numbers were 18 and 9 for Elon. The Mocs' next match is at 8 p.m. Friday at UT Martin. They will host Morehead State at 2 p.m. next Sunday at Finley Stadium.

Football

» Former UTC defensive lineman Derrick Lott, an All-Southern Conference honoree who played for the Mocs from 2012 to '14, signed with the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tennessee Titans in 2015, Lott has also spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders, as well as the Canadian Football League's Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Running

» Willy Fink, now a Blacksburg, Va., resident who this year ended his college running career at Eastern Michigan, won the Cam Run on Saturday on Moccasin Bend. Fink, who grew up in Maumee, Ohio, finished the Cameron Bean Memorial 5k in 14 minutes, 20 seconds. All-distance local star Christian Thompson was second in 14:46, and Chattanoogan Cole Bullock edged Dalton's Adan Rodriguez for third, 15:31 to 15:32. Patrick Ollinger of Decatur, Ga., was fifth in 16:06, and Dalton's Derek Gallardo and Chattanooga's Kevin Huwe were sixth and seventh out of 470 finishers in 16:29 and 16:33. Joanna Thompson of Blowing Rock, N.C., was the first female finisher and 19th overall in 17:24, one place and eight seconds ahead of Knoxville's Gina Rouse. Chattanooga's Jessica Marlier was the third woman and 24th overall in 17:59. The top 25 men and top 25 women qualified for the Magnum Mile downtown Saturday night, and the podium finishers were Fink, Christian Thompson and Bullock for the men and Joanna Thompson, Rouse and Marlier for the women.

Baseball

» Former Cleveland State baseball shortstop DeAndre Allen from Sequoyah High School in Madisonville, Tenn., died Aug. 20 from injuries sustained in a car accident. Allen, 24, went to Mount Olive (N.C.) College after his Cougars career ended in 2013, when he batted .301 with three home runs, 32 runs scored and 26 batted in. "DeAndre was an outstanding young man. For the two years he attended Cleveland State he was a pleasure to be around," Cleveland State coach and athletic director Mike Policastro said in a post at cscougars.com. "He loved baseball and being around his teammates. We will always remember him for his smile and love of cookies. He will be truly missed."

Volleyball

» Point University freshman Te'a Owens from Ridgeland High School had 17 digs in a 3-1 loss to Mobile, three aces in a 3-0 win over William Carey and seven kills in a comeback 3-2 win over Faulkner as the Skyhawks (4-3) went 2-2 in Life University's tournament this past weekend in Marietta, Ga. Owens totaled 20 kills in the four matches.
