Around the Region: Wes Cash wins 60s doubles title in Florida tournament

Top-seeded Wes Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Naple, Fla., won the Men's 60s doubles championship of the West Coast (Fla.) Super Senior Grand Prix tennis tournament Saturday at the Sterling Oaks club in Naples. They won 6-4, 6-2 over the No. 2 seeds.

- The UTC women's tennis team rebounded from losing the doubles point to beat Belmont 5-2 in a Friday night match in Nashville. The Mocs (4-2) played Lipscomb there late Saturday night. Team veterans Samantha Caswell and Rachele Gazzola won together in doubles and at Nos. 1 and 6 singles against Belmont, and Delaney Edwards, Caroline Hall and Sydney Patton also won in singles.

Fishing

- Reigning FLW Tour angler of the year Andy Morgan of Dayton made the final round for the tour's first 2017 tournament on Lake Guntersville. His three-day total of 49 pounds, 7 ounces is seventh among the 10 pros going back out today. Mark Rose of West Memphis, Ark., leads at 61-8. Former Ooltewah resident Jay Kendrick of Grant, Ala., the first-day leader with 25-13, finished 26th and Michael Neal of Dayton was 40th, each receiving $10,000. Cody Hammontree of Flat Rock, Ala., finished fourth in the co-angler division.

Baseball

- Lee University opened its baseball season Saturday by winning 6-0 and losing 2-1 at home against ranked Catawba. Art Vidrio and Joe Parete combined to pitch a four-hitter in the first game for Lee, when Miguel Pimentel drove in four runs, Geremy Walton was 3-for-4 and Drew Johnson homered and scored three runs. Peyton Meeker batted in Tyler Payne in game two.

- No. 2-ranked Faulkner edged No. 4 Tennessee Wesleyan 8-7 in the NAIA Southeastern Challenge in Montgomery, Ala., on Friday, and No. 12 St. Thomas beat the Bulldogs 13-3 before TWU topped No. 6 Lindsey Wilson 13-4 on Saturday. Friday for TWU, Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Allen had two-run hits and Alfred Cruz was 2-for-4 and scored a run. Against St. Thomas, Nehwon Norkey had two RBIs and Dan Ward was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Cruz homered, singled and scored three runs against Lindsey Wilson, when Edwin Bonilla was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Pedro Barrios was 2-for-3 with two RBIS and three runs.

- In a season-opening doubleheader Friday at Bryan, Rio Grande won 4-2 with three runs in the top of the first inning but the host Lions won 7-6 in 12 innings in game two, when Kila Zuttermeister was 3-for-6 and scored the winning run when Trevor Behrent reached base on a two-out error. Also for Bryan, Brookes Jones had two RBIs and Wade Weinberger had two hits and scored twice. Weinburger was 2-for-4 with a run, Justin Morhardt homered and Alec Turner was 2-for-3 for the Lions in game one, when Carlos Flores homered, singled and drove in two runs for Rio Grande. The teams played again Saturday with Bryan losing 11-6 and winning 19-12.

- Greensboro College completed a season-opening series sweep at Covenant by winning Saturday's games 12-8 and 5-0. Devin Cerrato and Julien Amorelli each batted in three runs and Joel Johnson was 3-for-3 and scored two in the first game for Covenant, when Forrest Hunter drove in two and went 2-for-4 along with Cerrato and Taylor Bloye.

Softball

- Lee beat Lynn 4-1 eight innings and lost 4-1 to Flagler on Saturday in the Southern Softball Showdown at Columbus, Ga. Abby McKinney pitched the entire first game and hit the tying double in the seventh before Bailey Church and Brooklynn Frazier drove in runs in the eighth. Frazier drove in two and scored one, and Stevie Baird, Church and McKinney each doubled and singled. Baird had two of Lee's five hits against Flagler, and Kayla Louie had an RBI single.

- Covenant opened its softballl season by beating Rust 16-1 and 17-5. Carsyn Stone and Tyler Eppes combined to pitch a five-inning no-hitter in game one, when Casey Grover was 2-for-2 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored and Madalyn Ames and Madyson Gibbins were a combined 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI in the leadoff spot. In game two, Grover was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, Kat Andrews was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, Shannon Schmitt was 2-for-3 with three runs and Jordan Brett was 1-for-1 with a home run, two walks, three runs and two RBIs.

Football

- NFL official Lee Dyer from Trenton, Ga., will be the post-Super Bowl guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. The Baylor School Hall of Famer just finished his 14th season working NFL games.
