Former Georgia defensive end Quentin Moses, a two-year starter and a 2005 All-Southeastern Conference selection, died early Sunday morning in a house fire in Monroe, Ga.

Moses was 33.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Quentin's family," Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said Sunday afternoon in a released statement. "We are shocked and saddened by this tragic news. Quentin was an outstanding representative of not only the University of Georgia but also his hometown of Athens.

"On behalf of UGA Athletics, we extend our most sincere condolences to his family."

Moses, who starred at Cedar Shoals High School in Athens before joining the Bulldogs, spent his first two years at Georgia backing up Robert Geathers, Will Thompson and three-time All-American David Pollack before posting one of the best single seasons in Bulldogs defensive history. As a junior in 2005, Moses racked up 20.5 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks.

Only outside linebacker Jarvis Jones (24.5 in 2012) and Pollack (23.5 in 2002) had more single-season tackles for loss in Georgia annals.

Moses wound up compiling 44.5 tackles for loss in his four-year career, second only to Pollack's 58.5. Current Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was running backs coach for the Bulldogs in 2005, and he posted Sunday on Twitter: "Very saddened to learn of the tragic death this morning of Quentin Moses. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this difficult time."

When Moses was a senior in 2006, the Bulldogs allowed just 258.2 yards per game, the lowest average of any Georgia defense since 1971.

After his Georgia days were over, Moses was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft. He wound up competing in 44 games for the Miami Dolphins from 2007 to 2010, compiling 29 career tackles.

Last fall, Moses completed his fifth season as an assistant football coach at NAIA program Reinhardt University in Waleska, Ga.
