Around the Region: Softball Mocs win Florida finale

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team closed out play in the season-opening NTC Tournament in Clermont, Fla., with a 6-4 win Sunday against Fairleigh Dickinson. Emma Sturdivant went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Hayleigh Weissenbach was 2-for-2 with a triple, a walk and an RBI for UTC (2-3), which trailed 3-0 when the first Moc went to bat. UTC scored one run in the first, two each in the second and third and a final in the fifth, with the Knights' other run coming in the fourth. Mocs starting pitcher Payten Price (1-2) allowed four runs, none earned, on seven hits and three walks while striking out seven. Freshman Alex Connell worked the final inning to earn her first save.

- After beating Mobile 2-0 Saturday night on a five-hitter by pitcher Leigh Beatenbough, Lee University beat Ursuline 15-4 and lost 3-0 to Indianapolis on Sunday at the Falcon Frenzy in Montevallo, Ala. Beatenbough - who struck out four and walked one - and Amanda Pruett each had a hit and scored a run in the fifth inning against Mobile, with Beatenbough coming home on Pruett's triple and Pruett on a wild pitch. Against Ursuline, Abby McKinney was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, Bailey Church was 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and four RBIs, and Courtney Crawford and Taylor Moran each was 2-for-3, Moran with a double and two RBIs. McKinney allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four to earn the win. She went 2-for-3 against Indianapolis. The Lady Flames finished 3-1 at the event and are 9-3 overall.

- Kaley Cagle was 2-for-3 with an RBI double in Cleveland State's 3-1 loss to Southern Union State and was the winning pitcher and went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, as did Macy Bryant, in an 8-3 defeat of Andrew College on Saturday in Georgia Highlands' Border Battle at Cartersville. The Lady Cougars (2-3) had 13 hits in the win.

Swimming

- Baylor School graduate Hannah Peiffer helped nationally second-ranked Queens University of Charlotte three-peat as the Bluegrass Mountain Conference swimming champion this past weekend in Charlotte by winning the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, participating in the first-place 200 and 400 medley relays and finishing fourth in the 200 individual medley. Peiffer, a three-time NCAA Division II national champion, entered her senior season with 17 All-America designations. Carson-Newman's Jon Lancaster from Heritage High School and the Baylor Swim Club was honored as men's swimmer of the meet with all-conference recognition in the 1000 freestyle and 200 and 400 IMs. He broke his school record with his second-place 400 IM.

Track & Field

- Lee junior Audrey Smith set a Samford Open indoor track record in winning the women's 5000-meter run Saturday in Birmingham. Her 18:02.14 time won by more than eight seconds. Lee's Christian Noble set a school record of 4:13.89 in winning the men's mile run, barely edging teammate Harold Smith (4:13.92), and Noble in the 5000 (second place) and Josiah Brooks in the 60- and 200-meter dashes ran provisional qualifying times for the NCAA Division II national meet. Brooks also was fourth in the triple jump, and twin Justin Brooks was third in the 400. Harold Smith was third in the 800.

Baseball

- The Sewanee baseball team lost 3-0 and 8-4 to visiting Emory on Sunday, after falling 6-5 to the Eagles on Saturday. The Tigers' Beau Allen was 3-for-4 and scored a run in Saturday's game, and Jackson Cooper singled in their first run and began their tying three-run eighth inning with a triple. Bubby Terp was 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and four RBIs for Emory. On Sunday, Sewanee's Drew Mancuso was 2-for-4 with a double in the first game. In the second, Mancuso and Jared Demkowicz each was 2-for-4, the latter with a double and an RBI, and Trey Akins also drove in a run for the Tigers.
