Around the Region: Softball Mocs beat Radford, fall 7-6 to Tennessee Tech

The UTC softball team began play Friday in its Chattanooga Challenge with a 10-3 win over Radford, and then the Mocs rallied from five runs down but lost 7-6 to previous winless Tennessee Tech. UTC (3-4) trailed Radford 3-0 before scoring five runs in the third inning on an RBI double by Aly Walker and two-run homers by Ashley Conner and Brook Womack. J.J. Hamill tripled in a run in the fourth and added a three-run homer after Emma Sturdivant's RBI double in the fifth. Conner was 3-for-4, Sturdivant was 2-for-3 and pitcher Payten Price allowed six hits and only one earned run. Against Tech, Walker was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Conner and Womack each had two hits and scored a run. Gabby LaSala homered and singled and drove in four runs for TTU (1-6), and former Walker Valley and Lee University player Hallie Davis was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.

* Chattanooga State opened play in a Gulf Shores, Ala., tournament by winning 8-5 over Lamar State-Port Arthur, 4-3 over Trinity Valley and 7-4 in eight innings over Copiah-Lincoln. Kaleigh Wynne got a save and two pitching wins with 20 strikeouts in 13 innings, had an RBI double in the first game and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Lady Tigers (7-1) in the third game, when Aimie Davidson's second hit drove in two runs in the eighth. Abby Hicks was the winning pitcher against LSPA, when Lillie McCrary was 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs and Alaeni Ray also was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Tori Barnes had a two-run double and Jennah McElheney and Davidson each doubled and singled against Trinity Valley.

* Bryan College lost 5-3 to 10th-ranked William Carey and won 6-0 over Faulkner on Courtney Petty's no-hitter Friday in the NAIA Southeastern Softball Challenge in Bluffton, S.C. Hannah O'Shields hit a two-run homer and Kaleigh Riley was 2-for-3 and scored a run in the loss for the Lady Lions (3-5). Heidi Smith, Petty and Marissa Murray each had two hits, Smith with two runs, against Faulkner, and Kim Borowski was 1-for-1 with two RBIs.

Baseball

* Caleb Bloye's second home run Friday gave the Covenant College baseball team an eight-inning 3-2 win and a doubleheader sweep of visiting Berea. The Scots (5-3) won 13-1 in the first game and scored two runs in the seventh of game two to avoid a split. Luke Harvey was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Trenton Nobles was 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored in game one, when Bloye was 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs, Devin Cerrato was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Matt Reitz pitched a seven-inning four-hitter with six strikeouts. Cerrato was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the rematch, and Drew Bradley threw an eight-inning four-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

* Cleveland State topped visiting Vincennes 8-2 and 7-1 Friday and is 5-1. In the first game the Cougars' Chase Fullington and Hagan Kennedy each was 2-for-3, with two RBIs and one, Jordan Ransom doubled and singled and scored twice and Jake Rogers pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts. Hooper Mills followed with a three-hitter and seven strikeouts, while Noah Hill was 2-for-3 and scored twice and Trent Elliott was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

* Tennessee Wesleyan is 6-3 after beating Brescia 12-2 in Athens. Dan Ward was 3-for-5 with a home run, five RBIs and three runs, Collin Ridout homered and singled and brought in four runs, Nehwon Norkeh also homered and Chris Allen had two hits and three runs. Chris Washington pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and one earned run.

* The Bryan baseball team won 13-5 and lost 5-3 against visiting Madonna on Friday. The Lions' Trevor Behrent and Justin Morhardt were 3-for-4 and 2-for-4 with a combined three doubles and three RBIs apiece in the first game, when Brookes Jones and Fernando Garcia each was 2-for-3 and scored twice and Mikey Rita had two RBIs and two runs. Morhardt was 2-for-3 in the loss, and Wade Weinburger tripled and scored twice. He, Behrent and Lake Burris each had an RBI.

Basketball

* The Covenant women's basketball season ended Friday night in Maryville with a 79-56 loss to LaGrange in the USA South tournament. Aleigha Williams scored 15 points and Kaley Hallmark had 11 plus four assists for Covenant (12-13), which shot 22-of-66 from the field.

* The Covenant junior varsities both beat Georgia Northwestern on Thursday in Rossville, 75-72 in the men's game and 48-37 in the women's. That ended an 0-17 season for the Lady Bobcats, who had only five players available. Katy Phillips had 11 points, Sprite Dyer 10 points, Sharqueva McCoy 12 rebounds and Carrie Benedict eight rebounds and three blocks in defeat. For the Bobcats, Darrius Fugh had 21 points and four assists and Alec Rattanaxay and Demonte Parker scored 14 and 12 points. Ari Zorns scored 24 for the Scots, who got 16 from Joe Womack and 14 from Jake Johnson. The GNTC men (12-11) host Warren Wilson today at 3:30, followed by a reception honoring David Stephenson's 30 years in coaching. All of his former players are especially invited to attend.
