Area College Roundup: Bryan women upset Point, join TWU teams in AAC semifinals

Tennessee Wesleyan's basketball teams both won quarterfinal games Thursday in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament in Kingsport, Tenn., and the sixth-seeded Bryan women beat third seed Point 63-50, but the 10th-seeded Bryan men could not add another upset. The Lions fell 78-71 to No. 2 seed Reinhardt.

Wesleyan's fifth-seeded women beat fourth seed Bluefield 65-56, and Wesleyan's men also defeated Bluefield, 95-90, with the seeds reversed.

Jordan Hall made four of six 3-point shots and scored 19 points for TWU's Bulldogs (18-12), who got 18 points and four steals from Tre Tiller, 17 points from Johnson Decembre and 13 points from Kobe Foster. TWU hit 28 of 37 free throws, compared to 10 of 16 for Bluefield. That game had 19 lead changes and nine ties.

Hunter Simpson had 18 points and five assists and Kenzie Conn scored 17 in the win for the Lady Bulldogs (17-13), while Madison Walkup had 14 points with four 3s and nine rebounds. They play today at 2 p.m. against top seed Milligan (23-8), and the TWU men face Union College (28-3) at 6.

Bryan's women (16-14) take on second-seeded Reinhardt (27-4) at 4 after ousting Point (23-6) with 22 points from Amber Levi and 14 points and nine rebounds from Megan Billingsby. Reinhardt's Lady Eagles beat Montreat 78-52 with 16 points from Heritage High School graduate Jada Hubbard, 14 plus nine rebounds and three steals from Rebecca Cheeks of Sonoraville and eight points from Dade County's Erika Woodfin.

Reagan Johnson made four 3s and scored 20 points for the Bryan men (11-20), while Oteriah Lee had 15 points and eight assists and Tyler Yoder contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

In addition to the All-AAC selections reported Thursday, freshman of the year Cheeks and Reinhardt's other Sonoraville High School alumna, Payton Smith, made the women's all-defensive team and Wesleyan's Savannah Atkins joined Cheeks on the all-freshmen team. TWU's Foster was a men's all-freshmen selection.

- West Florida 90, Lee 81: At Pensacola, their Gulf South Conference hosts ended the Flames' postseason hopes although Keevin Tyus scored 27 points and Rico Overall added 19. Levi Woods and Jervon Johnson scored 11 and 10 for Lee, which ends its season at Valdosta State.

- West Florida (w) 74, Lee 69: The Lady Flames fell to 19-8 overall, 14-7 in the GSC, with a good showing against the strong Argonauts (22-5, 17-4). Erin Walsh scored 18 points and Carrie Cheeks had 16 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals for Lee, while Abby Bertram had 14 points, six assists and three steals.

- Dalton State 92, Brewton-Parker 77: At Mount Vernon, Ga., NAIA Division I's fifth-ranked Roadrunners rose to 23-4, 15-4, in posting Tony Ingle's 100th victory as the program's coach. They also moved into a tie for first place in the Southern States Athletic Conference with William Carey (21-6, 15-4), which lost 91-81 to Loyola of New Orleans. The regular season ends Saturday.

- Averett 82, Covenant 66: At Danville, Va., the Scots ended their season in the first round of the USA South tournament, despite 15 points from Patjo Twagirayezu and 10 apiece from Z Arima, Will Portlock and Ben Phelps. Berto Dryden made four steals in defeat. Conference player of the year Charles Bryant had 30 points and eight rebounds for Averett, which pulled away with a late 11-0 surge.
