Georgia and Virginia will meet on Labor Day night at the 2020 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The matchup was reported weeks ago, but the Sept. 7 date was not revealed until Wednesday. The Bulldogs have not opened on Labor Day evening since 1985, when they lost a 20-16 thriller against Alabama in Sanford Stadium.

Virginia has yet to play in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, which made its debut in 2008, while Georgia has made two appearances. The Bulldogs lost to Boise State 35-21 in the 2011 event and beat North Carolina 33-24 this past season, which was the final Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome.

The Bulldogs hold a 9-7-3 series edge over the Cavaliers, with the two teams having met three times during the postseason from 1995 to 2000. Virginia defeated Georgia in the Peach Bowl after the 1995 season, but the Bulldogs topped the Cavaliers in the Peach Bowl after the 1998 season and in the Oahu Bowl after the 2000 season.

They have not met since that Oahu Bowl.

Chick-fil-A Kickoff contests have averaged more than 67,000 fans per game, which is a higher average than 35 bowl games this past season. The team payout averages $4.7 million, which is higher than 26 bowls.
