HAMPTON, Va. - Heavyweight Jared Johnson won all three of his bouts, but as a team the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestlers came up short Friday at the Virginia Duals.

The 11th-ranked Johnson improved to 18-5 and two of his wins were against ranked opponents - 4-1 over No. 19 Ross Larson of Oklahoma and 3-0 over No. 16 Thomas Haines of Lock Haven.

"The guy's a picture of consistency, and I would not have been surprised if he had pinned in the last one to win the dual," Mocs coach Heath Eslinger said. "You can never count him out."

UTC ((3-6) had an early lead in its final team match of the day but lost 19-18 to Lock Haven. The Mocs lost the opener Friday morning to Old Dominion, 21-10, and then fell 34-6 to 15th-ranked Oklahoma.

The Mocs were without senior 174-pounder Sean Mappes, who was left at home with an undisclosed injury.

"We learned some things today," Eslinger said. "It's tough to win duals without a guy like Mappes, but we do have a chance to bounce back tomorrow."

The Mocs will wrestle Bucknell (2-4) at 10 this morning.

While Johnson was the only unbeaten Moc, 184-pound Bryce Carr came within an overtime takedown of matching the senior heavyweight. That loss was to Old Dominion's ninth-ranked Jack Dechow.

Other Mocs with two wins were Alonzo Allen (125) and Chase Zemenak (141).
