Around the Region: Lee basketball teams win at Union University

The Lee University women's basketball team bounced back from a second-half collapse Thursday at Christian Brothers with a 74-69 Gulf South Conference win Saturday in Jackson, Tenn., against old nemesis Union University. Lee also won the men's game, 75-68, after rallying from a 33-20 deficit with a 31-10 run. Lee's Lady Flames (11-4, 6-3) shot 49.1 percent in their game compared to 38.1 percent for Union (9-7, 4-6), which got 19 points from Bria Gaines and 15 from Jada Smith. Carrie Cheeks led Lee with 15 points and seven rebounds, and Erin Walsh, Haley Cornellison and Lindsey Roddy scored 13, 11 and 10 points while Abby Bertram passed for five assists. For the Flames (9-6, 5-4), Keevin Tyus scored 23 points, Jervon Johnson scored 17 with three 3s and Levi Woods had 16 points and nine rebounds.

* The Chattanooga State basketball teams returned to TCCAA play Saturday with wins against visiting Cleveland State, 61-49 in the women's game and 67-67 in the men's. Joe Gordon scored 18 points, Orlando Moore supplied 14 and DaV Moore and Maleek Taylor added 10 each for the winning Tigers (9-5, 5-2), DaV Moore with 10 rebounds. The Cougars dropped to 9-3, 4-3. The Lady Tigers are 4-8, 2-5. Cleveland's Lady Cougars (9-6, 3-4) on Tuesday had beat the Milligan junior varsity 54-29 with 16 points and 10 rebounds from Keya Jenkins.

* Payton Smith and Rebecca Cheeks from Sonoraville High School and Erika Woodfin from Dade County each scored 17 points as first-place and nationally 22nd-ranked Reinhardt beat visiting Bryan 70-44 in Appalachian Athletic Conference women's basketball Saturday. Woodin was 5-of-9 on 3s and Cheeks had eight rebounds for the Lady Eagles (18-2, 10-2). Maebry McNeese led Bryan (8-9, 6-5) with 10 points, and Megan Billingsby had seven rebounds. The Reinhardt men (13-5, 7-4) won 82-80. Oteriah Lee, Tyler Yoder and Brice Cusick scored 20, 19 and 17 points for Bryan (4-14, 1-9), Yoder with seven rebounds, while Wray Fuller had seven assists and Reagan Johnson had 11 points, five assists and three steals.

* Dalton State, ranked No. 9 in NAIA Division I men's basketball, edged No. 18 William Carey 81-79 in a Southern States Athletic Conference game Saturday in Hattiesburg, Miss. Reed Dungan scored 24 points with 7-of-11 success on 3s and Isaiah Box and J'Quayveon Williams added 16 and 13 points for DSC (14-1, 6-1), while Carnilious Simmons grabbed nine rebounds and Mike Harden had seven assists and eight rebounds.

* David Campbell scored 26 points, 12 from the free-throw line, in leading Truett-McConnell to an 84-79 AAC victory over visiting Tennessee Wesleyan. Johnson Decembre scored 13 points and Will Gardner and QD Cox added 12 and 10 for TWU, while Tre Tiller had nine rebounds with nine points. TMC also won the women's game, 67-62, with 28 points from Ariana Sanders. Hunter Simpson had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Gina Dick and Savannah Atkins scored 13 and 10 points for TWU.

* Greensboro College made 25 of 40 free throws, led by Darus Maddox with 11 of 13 and 21 points, and defeated visiting Covenant 80-67 in USA South men's basketball Saturday. The Scots (7-8, 1-4) shot 9-of-13 from the line and were led by Z Arima with 15 points. Berto Dryden and Nick Palmer each scored 11 and Bailey Spragg tallied 10, while Patjo Twagirayezu had eight rebounds.

* Despite leading by five points after three quarters, the Covenant women fell 69-61 in their USA South game at Huntingdon, which had four players with 14 or 13 points and another with 10. Kaley Hallmark scored a career-high 19 points and Joanna Smith had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Covenant (6-8, 0-4), which got another seven rebounds from Rachel Price.

* UTC men's basketball assistant coach Peter Gash will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.

Bowling

* The Rhea County High School girls' bowling team will take a 23-0 record into the TSSAA state tournament Friday at Smyrna after beating Oakland 21-6 on Saturday at Crystal Lanes in Dayton. Rhea had a 3,054-2,827 margin in total pinfall. The Walker Valley girls lost 24-3 to Blackman (12-1) in their sectional in Murfeesboro. In boys' sectionals Monday, Region 3 champion McMinn County will host Tullahoma at 1 p.m. at Classic Lanes in Athens and District 5 champ Rhea County will be at Smyrna for a 2 p.m. EST start.

Softball

* Moe's in Fort Oglethorpe is holding a UTC Softball Spirit Night on Tuesday, when a percentage of the sales from 5 to 8 p.m. will go to the school's softball program.
