Around the Region: Avery Hubbard wins 60, third in 200 in ETSU indoor meet

Past Red Bank High School and Tennessee Wesleyan standout Avery Hubbard won the men's 60-meter dash and was third in the 200 with Tennessee Wesleyan's Josh Parsons from Rhea County fourth in the 60 and seventh in the 200 at the ETSU Track and Field Invitational indoor meet Saturday. Their respective times were 6.70 and 6.81 seconds and 21.85 and 22.19. Hubbard's finish qualified him for the USA Indoor Championships on March 3-5 in Albuquerque, N.M. East Tennessee State University freshman Tiana Davis from Ooltewah finished second in the women's 200 in 25.41. Carson-Newman University senior T.J. Davis from Ooltewah provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II nationals with a second-place and personal-best indoor long jump of 7.24 meters, and Tennessee Wesleyan's Chaz Hawkins from Signal Mountain was sixth in the men's 60 hurdles in 8.61.

Basketball

- Sewanee swept visiting Rhodes in a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader Sunday, with the men winning 111-101 and the women winning 72-69. Hannah McCormack had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Bella Taylor scored a game-high 23 points with five rebounds and four assists for the Tigers (5-10, 2-3), who led 16-9, 39-27 and 51-44 at the quarter breaks but needed Taylor's 3-for-4 showing at the foul line in the final seconds to seal the victory. Sue Kim contributed 11 points and Savannah Rose 10 rebounds for Sewanee, and Jessie Ustick's 19 points led Rhodes (1-15, 0-5). In the men's game, Sewanee sophomore Matthew Lee came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting with four rebounds, three assists and three steals, while senior starter Brody Stone finished with 21 points, 17 rebounds and five assists. Jorden Williams added 20 points, Adrian Thomas 13 points, Clay Born 11 points and six assists and Leo Born seven rebounds and six steals for the Tigers (10-5, 3-2), who were up 54-49 at halftime. Anesu Nyawata paced Rhodes (6-9, 3-2) with 20 points.

- The Georgia Northwestern Technical College men's team won both of its games at the Oxford Classic in Covington, Ga., beating host Oxford College of Emory University 77-72 Friday and Emmanuel College's junior varsity team 78-68 on Saturday to end their losing streak at three games. Darrius Fugh led the Bobcats (6-6) by recording double-doubles in both games, with 32 points and 10 rebounds against Oxford and 22 and 12 against Emmanuel. Against Oxford, Demonte Parker had 16 points, Patrick Simmons scored 13, Daniel Parrish had 11 assists and Alec Rattanaxay made six steals. Against Emmanuel, Parrish had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while Parker scored 12 points.

Swimming

- Heritage High School and Baylor Swim Club alumnus Jon Lancaster earned his ninth event victory of Carson-Newman's season by more than four seconds in the 200-yard breaststroke Friday at Emmanuel College. Lancaster's time was 1:54.34. Carson-Newman won 159-103 in the men's competition and 186-76 in the women's. Gillian Cline from Estill Springs was part of the women's 200-medley relay win.
