Around the Region: Phillip Fulmer to speak at FCA's Road to Victory banquet

Hall of Fame former Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer will be the keynote speaker at this year's Fellowship of Christian Athletes "Road to Victory" fundraising banquet Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Colonnade Center in Ringgold. Fulmer, a Winchester native who played for the Volunteers, had a 152-52 with a national championship as their coach. "We are thrilled to have Coach Fulmer as our speaker this year," area FCA director Jay Fowler said in a release. "He always instilled the values of character, loyalty, hard work and excellence, which mirrors our values in FCA." Basketball

- The Lee University women's basketball team beat visiting Alabama-Huntsville 72-56 in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday. The UAH men won 101-94 and are 13-4, 9-2 in the league. For Lee's Lady Flames (12-5, 7-4), Carrie Cheeks had 15 points and seven rebounds, Erin Walsh 14 points and Abby Bertram 13 points and seven assists. Chandler Elder and Baylee Johnson scored 21 and 19 points for UAH. Brandon Roberts led the Chargers with 34 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field and 12-of-14 on free throws, and Seab Webster had 22 points. The Flames (9-8, 5-6) got 21 points from Jervon Johnson, 18 on six 3s from Cody Jones, 15 from Levi Woods and 12 plus 10 rebounds from Keevin Tyus.

- The Roane State women's team won 75-60 in TCCAA basketball Saturday at Chattanooga State, before the Roane men won 75-65. Lacy Cantrell led four Roane women in double figures with 13 points, overcoming Taylor Simmons' 20 and Mia Collins' 18, plus 11 rebounds. Jeniah Williams added eight rebounds in defeat.

- The first-place and nationally ranked Walters State men's team barely prevailed, 65-61, after the second-place Walters women won 66-47 in TCCAA games at Cleveland State. The host Cougars' Cam Copeland led all scorers in the men's game with 16 points and made three steals, while Tevin Olison added 11 points and Jordan Williams grabbed 10 rebounds. Abby Hubert had 16 points with 3-for-4 success on 3s for the Lady Cougars.

- Carnilious Simmons had 16 points, 15 rebounds and three steals as Dalton State rose to 17-1 and 9-1 in the Southern States Athletic Conference with a 79-70 homecoming win over Coastal Georgia. Reed Dungan scored 24 points, Isaiah Box added 13 and Sayvon Wilson had eight rebounds.

- A 26-11 fourth quarter gave the Truett-McConnell women a 58-48 Appalachian Athletic Conference win over visiting Bryan. Katie Wolfe had 17 points and Amber Levi had 10 for Bryan (9-10, 7-6). The Bryan men improved to 5-15, 2-10, with a 72-68 victory. The Montreat men beat Tennessee Wesleyan 104-88.

- Erika Woodfin from Dade County scored 12 points as the Reinhardt women improved to 19-3, 11-3 in the AAC, with a 62-55 win over visiting Bluefield.

- Bailey Spragg and Will Portlock each scored 14 points, Spragg with seven rebounds, and Caleb Haynes added 13 points as the Covenant men won 66-61 in their USA South game at LaGrange. The Lady Scots won 80-58 at Agnes Scott as Emma Grimes had 26 points with eight 3s and Joanna Smith had 18 points and 12 rebounds.

- Jorden Williams' game-high 17 points Friday night at Millsaps put him in the top 10 in career scoring for Sewanee men's basketball and No. 2 in career 3-point baskets with 253. The senior from McCalle School has 1,310 points with the Tigers, who won at Millsaps for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

- UTC women's assistant coach Katie Burrows will be the guest speaker at the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.

Swimming

- GPS graduate April Forsthoffer broke one of the six pool records the Drexel University women's swimming team amended Saturday in a win over Georgetown at the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia. Forsthoffer, a sophomore, broke a 30-year-old mark that belonged to a La Salle swimmer in the 400-yard individual medley. The old record was 4:31.42; the new time is 4:30.90. Forsthoffer also won the 200 butterfly (2:07.42). Drexel freshman Jon Pat Ransom from McCallie was third in the men's 400 IM, and Georgetown's Chandler Hinson from Baylor School was on the second-place men's 200 freestyle relay and was fifth in the 200 backstroke.

Softball

- The Lady Moc RBI Club is sponsoring "Meet the Team Night" for the UTC softball Mocs on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the indoor practice facility at Warner Park. After a brief workout the players will be available for autographs, and the public is invited.
