Around the Region: Lee basketball teams fall to Union

Old rival Union University came to Cleveland and won two Gulf South Conference basketball games over Lee on Thursday, 85-72 in the women's game and 69-64 in the men's. The Union women (10-9, 5-8) jumped ahead 24-18 at the end of a quarter and stayed in control with 47.3 percent shooting for the game, compared to 38.3 percent for the Lady Flames (12-6, 7-5), who also were out-rebounded 42-30 and had veteran post Carrie Cheeks foul out with only 11 minutes of court time and six points. Freshman point guard Abby Bertram also fouled out, but that was in 28 minutes and she had team highs of 20 points and three steals. Shelby Brown added 13 points for Lee, while Jada Smith scored 20 and Bria Gaines had 18 and matched Fredi Nielsen with 11 rebounds for Union. Tiffani Rechis and Chelsea Bodiford combined for seven 3-point baskets and 29 points. Jervon Johnson scored 19 points with four 3s for the Flames (9-9, 5-7), while Keevin Tyus and Levi Woods had 13 points each and Cody Farley contributed seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Tray Boyd and Nick Velasquez each hit four 3s and had 19 and 14 points in leading five double-figure scorers for the Bulldogs (10-9, 5-8).

- The Chattanooga Football Club has announced an added fan bonus for the United States men's national soccer team's friendly against Jamaica next Friday night at Finley Stadium: an after party with the U.S. players at Feed Co. Table & Tavern. Tickets for the party cost $50 and include a ticket to Chattanooga FC's Feb. 11 match against Atlanta's new MLS team as well as a chance to win merchandise signed by the U.S. players. The after party will be limited to 250 people. Tickets are available at ChattanoogaFC.com. "We couldn't be more thrilled to have the men's team here to help us raise money for the CFC Foundation," foundation chairman and CFC board member Krue Brock said in a release. "All of the money raised will stay in Chattanooga to help us develop facilities, provide equipment and promote the game to everyone across all socioeconomic backgrounds."
