Around the Region: UTC runners have good day in Carolina

Six runners finished in the top 10 for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's track and field team Sunday at UNC Greensboro's Dual Meet Madness in Winston-Salem, N.C. Finishing fourth were Kennedy Thomson with a time of 5 minutes, 12.74 seconds in the mile run and Anna Kate Chance in 10:42.56 in the 3000-meter run. UTC also had the ninth- and 10th-place finishers in the 3000 and the 800. Abby Bateman clocked a 2:21.75 for ninth in the 800, with Nicole Buehrle 10th in 2:22.16. Also, Julia Henderson was 15th in 2:25.01. In the 3000, Hannah Caldwell ,was ninth in 10:51.19, with Rebekah Wich 10th in 10:52.09. Just outside the top 10 in that event was UTC's Brianna Nelson at 11:01.17 for 12th.

Tennis

- The UTC men's team dropped a home match Sunday, falling 5-2 to Belmont at McCallie's Strang-Voges Tennis Center. The Mocs got team points from freshmen Niklas Gerdes and Simon Bustamante in singles play. Gerdes won 6-2, 6-4 against Cedric Dujacquier on the No. 1 court, while Bustamante defeated Zak Khan 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) in the No. 4 spot. The Mocs lost their fourth straight match to start the spring schedule, while Belmont improved to 3-1.

- The UTC women lost 4-1 to Memphis on Sunday in Murfreesboro, with sophomore Caroline Hall's 6-3, 6-1 victory against Marta Morga in the No. 4 match providing the lone team point for the Mocs (3-2). Memphis, which completed two doubles wins and two singles victories before other courts' contests were halted, remained undefeated through three matches.

Basketball

- Sewanee split a home Southern Athletic Association doubleheader against Birmingham-Southern on Sunday, with the women winning 62-45 and the men losing 67-62. In the women's game, Bella Taylor paced Sewanee (6-13, 3-6) with a game-high 23 points while grabbing six rebounds, while teammate Corey Caulder had 10 rebounds and Sue Kim had eight points with three steals and as many assists. It was the first loss in nine SAA games this season for Birmingham-Southern (13-7), which trailed 18-16, 32-26 and 48-33 at the quarter breaks and got 22 points from Camilia Carter. In the men's game, the Tigers (12-7, 5-4) lost to Birmingham-Southern (10-10, 6-3) for the second time in three games. Jorden Williams scored 18 points and Cam Caldwell had 10 each in points and rebounds for the Tigers, with Hunter Buescher chipping in eight points and Brody Stone getting eight rebounds. James McLean had 22 points and Harrison Deneka 20 for Birmingham-Southern, which held a 32-27 edge at halftime.

- JessAnn Nix, from Calhoun, Ga., led all scorers with 21 points as Reinhardt beat Allen 77-49 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference game Saturday in Columbia, S.C. The Lady Eagles (21-3, 12-3) tied the program record for single-season wins with six regular-season games remaining. Sonoraville alum Rebecca Cheeks added 17 points with a team-leading seven rebounds, and former Dade County player Erika Woodfin scored 11 points.
