Chattanooga State sophomore third baseman Devan Brown from Ringgold is a 2017 NJCAA Division I softball second-team All-American, and freshman teammate Kaleigh Wynne from Knoxville is a third-team selection as a pitcher. Brown batted .402 with a .677 slugging percentage, 11 home runs, 10 doubles, a triple, 56 RBIs, 46 runs scored and only four strikeouts in 187 plate appearances this year for the national-tournament participants. In addition to 55 putouts, she also had 123 assists, the most on the team by 46. Wynne, who played second base when she didn't pitch, hit .494 with a .555 on-base percentage, a .972 slugging percentage, 24 homers, 14 doubles, 26 walks, 85 RBIs, 59 runs and six strikeouts in 211 plate appearances, and she was 20-5 with three saves, a 1.78 earned run average, 163 strikeouts and 46 walks in 149 2/3 innings pitched. Walters State sophomore Jordan Fortel, who played for UTC as a freshman, was a first-team All-American with a .561 average, a 1.079 slugging percentage, 19 homers, 15 doubles, 50 walks, 72 RBIs, 75 runs, 12 stolen bases and three strikeouts. As a pitcher she was 19-3 with a save, a 1.33 ERA and 156 strikeouts with just 10 walks in 147 2/3 innings.

- Bryan College junior pitcher Brandon Marklund and sophomore outfielder Tucker Cain are among the 2017 Daktronics-NAIA Baseball Scholar-Athletes, which requires a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

- The Tennessee-Georgia football all-star game matching 2017 southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia high school graduates is tonight at 7:30 at Chattanooga Christian School. Tickets cost $10 (ages 9-under free). The all-star series continues with a nine-inning baseball game Monday at 6 p.m. at Ooltewah High and girls' and boys' soccer Thursday before the Chattanooga Football Club match at Finley Stadium. A softball doubleheader is set for June 19 at 6 p.m. at Frost Stadium.
