Around the Region: Lady Flames rout Union in GSC tournament

No. 3 seed Lee University routed visiting Union University 72-58 in a Gulf South Conference women's basketball quarterfinal Tuesday night and will play Valdosta State at 3:15 p.m. EST Saturday at Samford University in Birmingham. Shelby Brown scored 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field and freshman point guard Abby Bertram had 18 points and eight assists for Lee's Lady Flames (20-9), who led 19-5 after one quarter, 38-16 at halftime and by 31 points with 9:18 to play. Erin Walsh added 12 points with three 3-pointers, and Carrie Cheeks and Haley Cornellison had eight rebounds each for Lee. Brown had seven rebounds and three steals.

* The Dalton State men go into their Southern States Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal Thursday afternoon in Montgomery, Ala., as the No. 2 seed but the third-ranked team in NAIA Division I. The Roadrunners moved up Tuesday from No. 5 in the Feb. 14 poll.

Golf

* Led by a 2-under-par 70 from freshman Maria Pineiro, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team moved up five places in the final round Tuesday and finished 14th in the 43-school Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Spring Classic in South Carolina. UTC junior Cristina Perez shot a 72 and Maddy McDaniel, Megan Woods and Monica San Juan shot 73, 74 and 75. McDaniel finished in a tie for 24th individually at 220 for 54 holes. San Juan totaled 226 and Woods and Perez had 231s.

* Dalton State freshmen S.M. Lee and Tia Teiniketo are the SSAC golfers of the week after their finishes in the Georgetown Invitational. Teiniketo, from Baylor School, was second out of 57 women at 146 for 36 holes. Lee was fourth individually out of 64 men at 144, and he is the top-ranked NAIA golfer in the latest Golfstat rankings.

Track & Field

* Led by Josiah Brooks with All-South Region indoor honors in six events, 21 Lee University track and field athletes totaled 51 all-region times or distances this season, the USTFCCCA announced Monday. Ten Lee men accounted for 26 honors, the most in NCAA Division II, and 11 Lady Flames racked up 25, second in the country to Grand Valley State's 26. The Lee teams combined for 21 a year ago. All-region status comes with top-five region finishes in individual events and top-three postings in relays. With his 60-, 200-, 400-meter and 4x400 relay times and long jump and triple jump bests, Brooks was the only Division II athlete with six all-region accolades. His twin Justin Brooks and Flames teammates Christian Noble and Harold Smith had four each, Seth Eagleson and Brandon Raleigh had two apiece and Tucker Hindle, Thomas Kelton, Derek Flatford and Alex Carter added one each. Audrey Smith and Adrian Martin were all-region in four events each for the Lady Flames, while Jessica Childers and Cayce Bryan were triple honorees and Charlee Boxall, Amy Carpenter, Blakely Moore and Camilla Sims were two-event South standous. Jordan Allison, Hannah Buttolph and Lacey Duvall also were all-region. Both Lee distance medley relay foursomes - Justin Brooks, Noble, Harold Smith and Raleigh and Audrey Smith, Martin, Bryan and Childers - were No. 1 in the South, as were Noble in the men's mile, 3000 and 5000, Justin Brooks in the 400, Audrey Smith in the women's mile and 3000, Carpenter in the 5000, Childers in the 800 and Sims in shot put.

* Chattanoogans Tiana Mills and T.J. Davis were among the eight Carson-Newman track and field athletes who earned NCAA Division All-Southeast Region honors for the indoor season. Mills, from Girls Preparatory School, was the Eagles' lone female honoree with a 12.03-meter triple jump and a 5.70-meter long jump. Davis, from Ooltewah High, also is an all-region long jumper with a 7.24. A four-time all-region honoree now, he was second Sunday at the George Mason Last Chance Meet in Fairfax, Va., with a 7.22. Mills was second there with her 12.03 triple and third with a 5.49 long jump.
