Softball Mocs lose to Boston College, Charlotte

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team dropped to 1-3 in the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic near Orlando, Fla., with two losses Saturday - 8-0 to Boston College and 9-1 to UNC Charlotte.

The Mocs are 6-12 for the season going into their tournament finale this morning against Notre Dame.

J.J. Hamill had two of UTC's three hits against the Eagles, and she had three hits in two games for the second day in a row. The UTC run against the 49ers came on a bases-loaded walk by Ashley Conner in the third inning. That gave the Mocs a 1-0 lead, but Charlotte responded in their half of the inning with five runs on four hits and an error.

* At Carrollton, Ga., Lee University won 6-0 and lost 9-1 to West Georgia in a Gulf South doubleheader. Leigh Beatenbogh pitched the shutout, allowing seven hits, and Abby McKinney was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Also in that game, Annabeth Pruett was 2-for-3 and Kayla Louie was 1-for-1 with two RBIs for Lee (14-6, 5-3).

* At Berea, Ky., Covenant beat Berea 10-2 in six innings and 14-2 in five behind the pitching of Tyler Epes and Joni Johnson in the first game and Sarah Huskey in the second. Jordan Brett and Casey Grover were a combined 5-for-7 with a home run apiece, six RBIs and three runs scored in the opener for the Lady Scots (8-4), when Shannon Schmitt was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs.

Brett homered and drove in three runs again in the second game, scoring twice from two hits, and Grover and Shade Epes each doubled twice and drove in a run. Madyson Gibbins was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Erika Mast tripled andn singled, plating three runs and scoring two. Madalyn Ames scored three.

* At Sewanee, Tenn., undefeated Berry followed its five-inning home win Friday with 10-2 and 11-0 Southern Athletic Association victories Saturday against the winless Tigers.

Amanda Watters and Emily Taylor each was 1-for-2 with an RBI for Sewanee (0-8, 0-6) in Saturday's first game, when Karlie Jarrett was 4-for-4 and scored three runs, Marie Collop homered and drove in four and shortstop Sarah Moore from Baylor School as 2-for-2 and scored twice for Berry (16-0, 6-0). Moore was 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, two runs and an RBI in the finale, while Jarrett was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs and Whitney Gribble from Murray County pitched the first four innings of a one-hitter.

Sewanee splits

The Sewanee women's lacrosse team improved to 4-0 for the season witih a 15-5 win Saturday at Hendrix, but the Sewanee men lost 14-5 at home against nationally 19th-ranked Roanoke.

Farrell Guest scored three goals and Preston Cooper and Sydney Beldock added two apiece for the female Tigers, who have outscored their four oppoents 58-18. They scored the first six Saturday.

Hayden Hunt and Tristan Robinson each scored two goals for the Sewanee men (2-2), who got 13 saves from Selby Austin.

* At Boone, N.C., the first-year Lee women's program lost 18-9 to Lees-McRae but got four goals from Madeline Perrigo and three from Brianne Schapira. Hanah Rotello had a goal and an assist for Lee (0-5).
