Around the Region: Flames win GSC series at West Georgia

Lee won 5-2 at West Georgia on Sunday in the rubber game of a Gulf South Conference baseball series. Geremy Walton was 3-for-5, Miguel Pimentel was 2-for-4 and Peyton Meeker drove in two runs for the Flames (13-5, 5-4). Joe Parete (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief for the win and Kit Larson worked the final 1 2/3 innings for seventh save this season. West Georgia is 7-10, 2-7.

* Sewanee beat visiting Earlham 13-9 Sunday to sweep their three-game series. Jared Demkowicz went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and four RBIs to lead the Tigers (7-7). Max Murray was 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and four runs scored, Drew Mancuso had two hits and three RBIs, Trey Akins had two hits and two RBIs, Beau Allen had a double, a walk and two RBIs, and Ryan Poole was 1-for-2 with three walks. Daniel McDonnell pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and improved to 2-0.

* Tennessee Wesleyan went 3-0 against visiting Montreat in an Appalachian Athletic Conference series this past weekend, with a 10-inning 8-7 win Friday and a 4-3, 9-0 sweep Saturday. Grant Lang had two hits, three RBIs and the game-ending run on a Cody Erickson single in Friday's game, when Collin Ridout and Pedro Barrios each was 2-for-4 and scored three and two runs, Dan Ward was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Nehwon Norkeh tripled in two runs and scored in the fifth inning. In the first game Saturday, Erickson was 2-for-3, Edwin Bonilla hit a two-run homer and Wesleyan (12-7, 3-0) responded to Montreat's tying two runs in the top of the seventh with a winning walk for Ridout. Pitcher Carson Bach allowed three hits in six innings in the finale, when Dan Ward and Malik Stephens were a combined 4-for-5 with four RBIs and Ward, Barrios, Ridout, Bonilla and Norkeh all homered.

Softball

* Jesslyn Stockard's second-inning home run was the lone highlight for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in a 9-1 loss to Notre Dame on Sunday in their Citrus Classic finale in Orlando, Fla. Notre Dame (9-8) scored eight runs in the first. The Mocs (6-13) were held to two hits and committed five errors.

* Lee lost 13-5 at West Georgia in a GSC rubber game Sunday. Kayle Louie was 2-for-3 and Abby McKinney had three RBIs for the Lady Flames (14-7, 5-4). West Georgia is 11-9, 4-5.

* Chattanooga State completed a four-game TCCAA sweep at Motlow State with 5-0 and 10-1 wins Saturday, lifting the Lady Tigers to 14-4, 4-0 in the league.

Basketball

* Sayvon Wilson scored 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds on his way to the tournament MVP award Saturday night as Dalton State beat William Carey 90-80 in the Southern States Athletic Conference men's championship game in Montgomery, Ala. Isaiah Box hit six of 11 3-point tries and had 20 points and seven assists for the Roadrunners (27-4), who used a 16-4 run to take a 68-60 lead. Carnilious Simmons scored 18 points and joined Wilson on the all-tournament team, and Mike Harden added 14 points and five assists.

* The season starts fresh for the Cleveland State teams and Chattanooga State's Lady Tigers today in the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII tournament at Walters State in Morristown. After the Lady Tigers face Volunteer State at 2 p.m., the Lady Cougars (13-14, 6-12) take on Columbia State (5-25, 1-17) at 4. The Cougars (15-9, 9-9) play Dyersburg State (3-22, 1-17). If they win, both Cleveland State teams will play No. 2 seeds in the quarterfinals. Abby Hubert and Leisa Butler lead the Lady Cougars with 14.4 and 12.7 points per game; Tevin Olison leads the Cougars with 15.6, followed by Cam Copeland at 11.5, Victor Curry at 10.6 (and 9.4 rebounds) and Jordan Olison at 10.0. Chattanooga State's men (16-12, 9-9) open Wednesday against Southwest Tennessee (18-9, 11-7).

Lacrosse

* The Tennessee Wesleyan women's lacrosse team is 3-1 after winning 13-12 in overtime Saturday at Reinhardt, and the Wesleyan men lost 13-12 at Point. Jasmine Hickman had six goals, including the winner, and six ground balls for the Lady Bulldogs, while Emily Waldrop scored three goals and Kelly Bilz made nine saves. Roderick Williams had five goals and four assists and Drew Wassenaar had five goals with one assist for the Bulldogs (1-4).

Golf

* The Lee women's golfers were second and the men fifth after the first round of the Las Vegas Desert Classic on Sunday. The Lady Flames' 324 is six shots behind leader Missouri-St. Louis, and Haverly Harrold is second at 76, a stroke behind Emma Thorngren of Missouri-St. Louis. The Lee men shot a 286, led by Shea Sylvester's 70 that has him in the top 10, and are 12 shots behind first-place California Baptist.
