Around the Region: UTC golfers finish 10th in South Carolina tournament

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team fought through tough weather Tuesday in Aiken, S.C., and finished 10th at 875 in the 18-team Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate tournament. The Mocs shot 305 in the final round and finished one shot ahead of Furman. Clemson won at 835, one stroke better than Virginia. UTC's Wes Gosselin tied for 16th individually at 214, with Lake Johnson at 220, Stuart Thomas at 222 and Phillip Hickam and Brooks Thomas at 225. Johnson's former Chattanooga Christian teammate, Scott Stevens, had the third best score for third-place South Carolina and tied for 23rd at 216.

* Dalton State's men golfers finished third out of 10 teams at the Sand Shark Classic at Bluffton, S.C., with a 54-hole 888, 13 shots behind winner South Carolina-Beaufort. DSC's P.J. Shields tied for third individually at 219, and teammates S.M. Lee and Ben Rebne shared sixth place at 220, although Rebne did not count in the team scoring.

* Sewanee's men were fourth at 601 in the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate, led by freshman Gray Matthews in third place individually at 146, one shot behind the co-medalists. Tommy Oliver shot 151 and Nick Powell 153 for the Tigers. The Sewanee women were ninth, led by Sarah Battye tied for 16th at 158 and Meghan Symonds at 162.

Basketball

* Cleveland State ended its women's basketball season Tuesday in Morristown, Tenn., with a 64-45 loss to No. 2 seed Motlow State in the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII tournament. Kienya Jones had 15 points and 11 rebounds for Motlow (26-40), which got 10 points and five assists from Sydney Floyd and 10 points also from Ebony Shaw. Julia Gaither led the Lady Cougars (14-15) with 11 points. Host Walters State beat Volunteer State 70-38 and Southwest Tennessee defeated Roane State 49-35 in earlier games.

Baseball

* Leadoff man Pedro Barrios was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two batted in as Tennessee Wesleyan won 10-1 Tuesday in NAIA baseball at Mobile. Each team had eight hits, but Mobile (15-5) made five errors against the Bulldogs (13-7), who led 3-0 before piling on with a four-run fourth inning featuring Collin Ridout's three-run double. Nehwon Norkeh was 3-for-4 for TWU, and Adrian Gonzalez was 1-for-2 and scored four runs.

Softball

* Bryan College opened Appalachian Athletic Conference softball play Monday with 4-3 and 5-4 wins at Bluefield. Heidi Smith was 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs for Bryan (6-8) in the nine-inning second game, when Kim Borowski was 3-for-3, scored two runs and batted in one and Courtney Petty pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts. Hannah O'Shields hit a two-run homer and doubled and scored on an Aubrie Osborne single to give the Lady Lions a 3-0 lead in the first game, when Olivia Gore was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Ashley Brown went 3-for-4 and scored what turned out to be the winning run.

* Two area slowpitch softball teams finished first and second in the Freedom Sports Athens (Tenn.) Kick-off this past weekend, with Rodney Waters' Rock Fitness team beating Athletic Shop/King's Men 25-15 for the championship. Rock Fitness, led by Dalton Parham's batting and defense and also by C.J. Silvers on offense, earlier beat the runners-up 17-12. For Athletic Shop/King's Men, which beat Jam/Aftershock 18-17 twice and also 19-1 and added a 17-1 defeat of Southern Stix and a 28-13 win over third-place Tri-State VooDoo, Nathan Durham was 22-of-25 (.880) with three home runs, Tim Prarie belted five homers and Steven Monger hit .727 with four homers, Josh Couch .714, Garrett Reagan .696 with two homers, Josh Moffitt .681 and Ray Pollard .680 with three homers. Jimmy Thomas was 9-for-10.

Lacrosse

* Lee University's first-year women's lacrosse program netted its first three Gulf South Conference player-of-the-week distinctions Tuesday, when goalie Abby Sanders from Walker Valley High School was the defensive honoree and midfielder Madeline Perrigo got the offensive and freshman awards. Perrigo scored four goals in Saturday's loss at Lees-McRae, and Sanders had 10 saves, giving her 41 for the season.
