Around the Region: Softball Mocs win 6-5 at Tennessee State

Aly Walker was 3-for-4, batted in two runs and threw out a runner at home from right center as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team won 6-5 Wednesday at Tennessee State. Jesslyn Stockard was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Katy Richardson and J.J. Hamill each was 2-for-4 with an RBI for UTC (11-22), and Halie Williamson was 1-for-2 and scored twice. Celie Hudson (2-1) was the winning pitcher. After UTC went ahead 6-1 with four runs in the top of the seventh inning, the Tigers scored four with the help of three errors. Hudson started the inning, gave way to Alex Connell for two outs and returned to get a game-ending strikeout with the bases loaded. The Mocs are scheduled to host Samford in a three-game Southern Conference series Saturday and Sunday.

* Lee University edged visiting Trevecca Nazarene 3-2 and 3-2 Wednesday as Abby McKinney went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the first game and was the winning pitcher with an RBI triple and a run scored in game two. Taylor Moran got the save in that one after winning in relief of Leigh Beatenbough in the opener, when Kayla Louie was 1-for-2 with two runs and Stevie Baird had an RBI double for Lee (24-10).

* Covenant won 2-0 and 6-1 in Division III softball Wednesday at Sewanee. Cris Gant and Joni Johnson pitched a combined one-hitter with eight strikeouts, Shannon Schmitt was 3-for-4 and Jordan Brett was 1-for-1 with a two-run homer in the first game for the Lady Scots (20-12). Caroline Sweetin was 2-for-3 in the second game with the RBI for Sewanee (1-22), while Brett was 2-for-3 with another two-run homer, Erika Mast was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Madalyn Ames was 2-for-3 with a run for Covenant. Carsyn Stone and Tyler Epes each gave up two hits in three innings.

* In a first-place Appalachian Athletic Conference softball showdown at Bryan College, the host Lady Lions won 1-0 and lost 4-3 in 10 innings to Union College. That left Bryan 15-13, 9-1 in the AAC, while Union is 7-1 in the league.

Golf

* Dalton State freshman S.M. Lee was chosen the NAIA men's golfer of the week for competition of March 20-26 for his first-place 201 (68-68-65) in the Roadrunners' team victory at the Georgia Military Invitational. He set a 54-hole school record in his third medalist finish of the season, and his 65 tied a school record.

* UTC senior Wes Gosselin was both the Southern Conference men's co-golfer of the week and the SoCon student-athlete of the week after his career-best 10-under-par 206 in the Furman Intercollegiate tournament. He tied for second with Wofford's Andrew Novak, the other co-golfer. An exercise science major, Gosselin has a 3.84 grade point average.

* UTC sophomore Monica San Juan was the SoCon women's golfer of the week for her 23rd-place tie in the Henssler Intercollegiate's strong field. She shot 74-77-72.

Baseball

* Cleveland State beat the Bryan junior varsity 3-2 and 14-0 in baseball Wednesday. Trey Vanderpool was 2-for-3 with a run in the first win for the Cougars (21-9). Sean Coakley was 2-for-2 with two homers, three RBIs and three runs in game two, when Joey Roberson also had three RBIs, Billy Brand and Brandon Mason each had two and Grant Crosby pitched a five-inning one-hitter with seven strikeouts.

Tennis

* Former GPS standout Michelle Fleenor of Washington & Lee was the Old Dominion women's tennis player of the week. She beat a region-ranked opponent 6-0, 6-7, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to secure a 5-4 team win Saturday against 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon. W&L is No. 16. That left Fleenor 8-2 in singles and 7-3 in doubles this season.

* Tennessee Wesleyan sophomore Haruka Hirata was chosen the AAC women's tennis player of the week after she won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and 8-1 in doubles in the Lady Bulldogs' only match last week, a 9-0 league win over Point.

* Sewanee's Ellie Czura was the SAA women's tennis player of the week after winning four matches at No. 2 singles and No. doubles. She's 6-3 in both for the season.

General

* The funeral service for longtime local teacher and coach Virgil Roberson Sr. is set for noon Saturday at First Baptist Church, East Eighth Street, with burial to follow at Forest Hills Cemetery. Roberson's body will lie in state after noon Friday at John P. Franklin Funeral Home on Dodds Avenue, where a memorial service will be held at 6 p.m., after which the family will receive friends until 7:30. He died on March 22. Roberson competed for Howard in high school football, baseball and track and field and played football for four years at Morehouse College. He is in the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame and served on its board.
