Around the Region: Jesslyn Stockard lifts softball Mocs to win on senior day

Senior first baseman Jesslyn Stockard hit two home runs as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga beat UNC Greensboro 4-3 in Southern Conference sofball Sunday at Frost Stadium. Stockard gave the Mocs (13-34, 3-12) a 1-0 lead in the first inning on senior day with her first homer, and with her second she broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth after the Spartans (26-21, 9-5) had scored all of their runs in the top half of the inning. Amy Lewis, Emma Sturdivant and Hayleigh Weissenbach each added two hits for UTC, and Weissenbach and Ashley Conner each drove in a run. Freshman Celie Hudson (4-8) pitched a complete game.

- Lee lost 11-0 in five innings to 12th-ranked West Florida on Sunday as the Argonauts (39-12, 23-9) swept the Gulf South Conference series in Pensacola. Brooklyn Frazier went 2-for-2 for the Lady Flames (33-17, 19-13), who are seeded sixth for the GSC tournament and play Mississippi College on Thursday in Huntsville, Ala.

Lacrosse

- Sewanee's men held off rival and No. 1 seed Rhodes 8-7 on Sunday in Memphis to win their third straight Southern Athletic Association title. The second-seeded Tigers (10-6) led 6-2 after the first two periods, but the Lynx (14-3) cut their deficit to one goal three times in the final period, the last with 1:37 remaining, before Sewanee held on for the victory. Sewanee's Thomas Lynde and Jimmy Parker each scored twice - Parker also had an assist and two ground balls - while Jake Chintz, Drew Crain, Pat DiMento and Will Pratt added one score apiece. Pratt also had an assist, and Selby Austin made seven saves for coach Marty Watters' squad, which earned a fifth straight NCAA Division III tournament berth.

Tennis

- Tennessee Wesleyan's men's and women's tennis teams finished second in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament in Chattanooga, with the Bulldogs losing 5-4 to Reinhardt and the Lady Bulldogs losing 5-0 to Savannah College of Art & Design-Atlanta in Sunday's finals at Champions Club. The loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs' record to 12-7. The Bulldogs are now 12-4.

Baseball

- Lee beat host West Florida 4-3 in 10 innings Sunday to avoid a sweep in the GSC series. Chase Andrews' single brought in Nathan Wierzgac for the winning run, and Jumpei Akanuma worked a 1-2-3 bottom half to save the win for Tyler Burcham (1-0). Drew Johnson went 4-for-5 with two RBIs, Spencer Mossburg was 3-for-4 with a sacrifice bunt and one RBI, and Wierzgac and Jordan Howard each had two hits for the Flames (27-23, 13-20), who finished ninth in the GSC and missed the league tournament by one spot. West Florida is 26-22, 17-15.

Fishing

- In the Bassmaster High School Southern Open tournament Saturday on Chickamauga Lake that set B.A.S.S. all-levels records for total boats (347) and in-boat participants (1,033), Logan Henderson and Steven Swann from Springville (Ala.) High School set a record for biggest haul in a B.A.S.S. high school event with their five-fish limit totaling 24 pounds, 1 ounce. Another Alabama team, Chase Taylor and Colton Williams from Good Hope, was second with 22-11. Chase Carter and Adam Sansom of the North West Georgia Anglers got the Big Bass prize with a 10-11 largemouth, another B.A.S.S. high school record. Those two were ninth with a 19-2 total, two spots behind Sale Creek's Kaleb James and Davey Warf at 19-12. The Grundy County duo of Kyle Ingleburger and All-American Kyle Palmer were 13th at 17-10, one place ahead of Tellico Plains' Bryant Cooper and Christopher Miller at 17-3.

- Going into this past weekend, the Bryan College fishing team maintained a slight lead over North Alabama in the Cabela's School of the Year rankings, and Tennessee was third with UTC sixth and Tennessee Tech 10th. A lot of competition remains in the next month before the national title is decided, but Bryan leads the 211 schools listed with 2,133 points to 2,104 for North Alabama and 2,008 for Tennessee. UTC's total is 1,897.
