Around the Region: Tennessee, Georgia prep football stars meet June 10

The Great Clips Tennessee-Georgia Football Classic presented by "Stump on Sports" for 2017 graduates of area high schools will be held June 10 at Chattanooga Christian School, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission will cost $10, no charge for ages 9-under. This is the 14th version in the interstate series that began in 2004 at Ridgeland, and the 2010 game included Vic Beasley from Adairsville, now an Atlanta Falcons standout and the speaker for this year's Best of Preps banquet at the Chattanooga Convention Center on June 27. Central coach Cortney Braswell, who represented Baylor in the 2005 game, will be the Team Tennessee head coach; Heritage assistant Jeremy New will direct Team Georgia with Generals head coach E.K. Slaughter serving as offensive coordinator. The Tennessee-Georgia baseball game is scheduled for June 12 at 6 p.m. at Ooltewah and the softball doubleheader for June 19 at Frost Stadium at 6. Basketball and soccer games will be held as well.

Volleyball

* UTC volleyball coach Travis Filar released his team's 2017 schedule Monday, and it begins Aug. 25-26 at the Ole Miss Invitational with North Dakota, Florida A&M and Louisiana Tech also taking part. Then the Mocs (19-13 last year) will host tournaments the next two weekends at Maclellan Gymnasium. The Chattanooga Classic will include Murray State, Louisiana-Monroe and Sam Houston State; then the Scenic City Showdown will include Georgia State, Jackson State and SIU-Edwardsville. A strong field Sept. 14-16 in the Missouri State Invitational at Springfield, Mo., will precede the start of Southern Conference play Sept. 22 and 23 at home against Western Carolina and UNC Greensboro. Missouri State was 26-9 and went to the NCAA tournament, MSU's invitational includes another NCAA tourney participant in Washington State, plus Illinois.
