Around the Region: Lee's Summer Lanter repeats as Gulf South soccer player of year

Lee University senior forward Summer Lanter from Soddy-Daisy was chosen Gulf South Conference women's soccer player of the year for the second season in a row and gave post-vote evidence for it Tuesday night, and defenders McKenzie Bricker and Meagan Newman joined her on the all-conference first team. Senior midfielder Suzanne Arant and junior forward Mia Hollingsworth made the All-GSC second team from the nationally seventh-ranked Lady Flames (14-4), who edged visiting West Georgia 1-0 in a league tournamament quarterfinal Tuesday on Lanter's unassisted goal in the 85th minute. That gave her seven game-winning goals and 13 in all this season. Lee, which plays Friday in the semifinals at Montgomery, Ala., had margins of 23-6 in shots and 11-0 in corner kicks. Jackie Donaldson made 11 saves for West Georgia (8-9).

* Lee defender Samir Williams made the All-GSC men's soccer second team for 2017. Also for the Flames, midfielder Jared McWhorter was the league's freshman of the week after scoring the goal in the season-closing 1-0 win at Tusculum.

* Covenant College freshman Jake Major was the final USA South men's soccer rookie of the week for his two goals in a 9-0 win over Berea last Wednesday. The weekend postseason games did not count in the league selections. The goals in the 86th and 87th minutes were Major's first of the year. The Scots play North Carolina Wesleyan in a USAS tournament semifinal Saturday at noon in Rocky Mount, N.C.

* Tennessee Wesleyan freshman Yuri Parisotto and senior Nicole Broderick were the Appalachian Athletic Conference soccer offensive players of the week, each for scoring four goals in two games. It was the third such honor this season for Broderick, whose second-seeded Lady Bulldogs will host a quarterfinal match Friday in the AAC tournament. The TWU men play Friday at Union (Ky.), while Bryan's top-seeded women and No. 2 men will host quarterfinals.

Tennis

* Chattanooga tennis pro Wesley Cash was part of a 3-0 United States win over Brazil in the World ITF Team Competition 60-over men's tournament Tuesday in Miami. He and Ross Persons of Houston won 6-2, 6-1 in doubles to go with singles victories for Persons (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) and Atlanta's Max Buyckx (6-3, 7-6). The Americans face Great Britain in the quarterfinals.

Volleyball

* Despite 17 kills and 18 digs from Silvia Sartori and 15 kills by Bailey Kress, the Lee volleyball team lost 3-2 in a GSC match Monday at Shorter. The set scores were 11-25, 25-15, 25-18, 17-25, 18-16. Also for Lee (16-8, 7-5), Kristi Farley had 29 assists and 13 digs, Sadie Johnson added 21 assists, MaKayla Beebe had 23 digs and Quinne Daoust had eight kills. For Shorter (15-9, 8-4), Madeline Munroe and Kelsi Jones each had 11 kills and Tiffani Estep from Chattanooga and Central High School had eight, plus two block solos and six block assists.

* Covenant moved on to a USA South volleyball tournament semifinal at 4 p.m. Friday in Danville, Va., against William Peace with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-21) home win Tuesday against Huntingdon. Ginny Moore and Jessica Seehorn each had 10 kills, Moore with 16 digs, for the Lady Scots (22-7), while Schuyler Moore had 33 assists and Emily Moore had 17 digs.

Basketball

* Johnson Decembre had 22 points and nine rebounds in leading Tennessee Wesleyan to a 106-95 men's basketball victory over visiting Kentucky Christian on Tuesday. Jalen Oliver scored 16 points, Joshua Chairs had 13, Kenny Dean had 12 plus seven rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots and Jordan Hall also scored 12 points for TWU (1-2).

Field Hockey

* Sewanee is seeded fourth for the 2017 Southern Athletic Association field hockey tournament and will open against fifth seed Concordia Wisconsin (5-8, 2-4) at 11 a.m. EDT Friday in Memphis. Sewanee (7-7, 3-3) won 3-0 in its regular-season game against the Falcons. Friday's winner will face tournament host Rhodes in a semifinal at noon EDT Saturday.
