Around the Region: Wesley Cash's U.S. men's 60s World tennis team beats Spain for third

Wesley Cash of Chattanooga and his United States teammates beat Spain 3-0 with two defaults Friday in the bronze-medal match of the World ITF Team Competition for 60-over men in Miami. Max Buyckx of Atlanta beat Felix Riba 6-3, 6-1 and U.S. captain Ross Persons of Houston won 6-1, default over Javier Lazacano to clinch the team triumph. Persons and Cash won by default in doubles over Riba and Lazacano, leaving Cash undefeated for the week. He starts play in the World ITF individual tournament today.

Volleyball

-The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga lost 3-2 in Southern Conference volleyball Friday at Mercer (9-17, 3-10). The set scores were 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 19-25, 15-13. Miranda Elpers had 20 kills and 22 digs and Dani Szczepanksi and Mikaela Gauthreaux made 16 and 14 kills for UTC (13-14, 6-7), which got 43 assists and 12 digs from Madison Bergren and 10 assists and 11 digs from Megan Kaufman.

-Lee University used balance in defeating visiting West Georgia 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-18) in Gulf South Conference volleyball, as setters Sadie Johnson and Kristi Farley had 23 and 18 assists and Silvia Sartori, Quinne Daoust, Alex Reuter and Bailey Kress had nine kills apiece and Ellisia Kimble added eight. MaKayla Beebe had 21 digs for Lee (17-8, 8-5).

-Covenant College's 15th consecutive volleyball victory put the Lady Scots (23-7) in the USA South tournament championship match for the third time in four seasons. They won 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-14) over William Peace on Friday in Danville, Va., and play this afternoon against host Averett (32-3), which beat Maryville 3-0. Averett beat Covenant 3-1 on Sept. 15, also in Maryville. Friday for Covenant, Jessica Seehorn and Ginny Moore had 12 and 10 kills and 13 and 20 digs, Allie Jakes had 11 kills, Hannah Harris had nine, Schuyler Moore had 37 assists and 25 digs and Emily Moore had 20 digs.

-Sewanee freshman outside hitter Destiny Stewart was voted to the All-Southern Athletic Association first team and newcomer of the year for 2017, the league announced. Teammates Peyton Parent and Constance Connolly received All-SAA honorable mention. Stewart had 412 kills and 12 double-doubles of kills and digs in the Tigers' 26 regular-season games. She had 12 kills and 22 digs as they lost 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-13, 15-8) to Millsaps in the SAA tournament Friday at Berry. Also for Sewanee (13-14), Olivia Nichols had 14 kills and 16 digs, Caroline Owens 10 kills, Parent 27 digs with eight assists, Claire Crow 22 assists and 13 digs and Connolly 15 assists and 15 digs.

-The Bryan College volleyball season ended Thursday night with a 3-1 loss (25-18, 25-19, 22-25, 25-12) at Montreat, leaving the Lady Lions 6-22, 5-12 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Mariah Dunlop had nine kills and Emalie Hicks had seven for Bryan, while Kristen Parrish had 19 digs and Veronica Salas set 18 assists. Sidney Pierce added 11 assists.

Basketball

-The Bryan men's basketball team lost Friday for the first time in four games this season, 74-60 at Cumberlands (Ky.). Terrance Scales had 13 points and eight rebounds and Oteriah Lee and EJ Bush scored 12 points each for Bryan,

-Cleveland State's men's team dropped to 1-1 for the season with an 86-82 loss to South Georgia Technical College in the Roane State Classic on Friday.

-The Lee women's team gave a good accounting of itself in a 57-42 exhibition loss Thursday at North Carolina State of NCAA Division I. The Division II Lady Flames held the Wolfpack to 29.3 percent shooting from the field and got 10 points from Abby Bertram and eight rebounds with eight points from Carrie Cheeks.
