Around the Region: Lee women's soccer team advances in NCAA Division II tournament

The Lee University women's soccer team is headed to the next phase of the NCAA Division II national tournament after defeating Nova Southeastern 3-2 on penalty kicks Sunday at a regional in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The game was tied 1-1 after regulation - former Soddy-Daisy High School standout Summer Lanter drew the sixth-ranked Lady Flames even with her 89th-minute goal - and went through overtime scoreless to set up the shootout. Taylor Green, Lauren Peters and Suzanne Arant converted attempts for Lee (17-4-1), and Lady Flames senior goalkeeper Haley Gribler made a lunging save to help seal the win. Gribler made three saves for the day. Lee finished the game with a 23-9 edge in shots overall and 12-4 on goal over the Sharks (12-4-2), who scored on Bailey Corbin's 64th-minute goal. Lanter, the Gulf South Conference player of the year, scored her goal when she cleaned up the rebound of a shot by Mia Hollingsworth. Lee's next match is against GSC member West Florida, with that round-of-16 clash Friday at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tenn. The winner will take on either Carson-Newman or Columbus State in a round-of-eight match next Sunday.

BASKETBALL

* Lee's men won their second straight game to open the season, topping Miles 79-70 on Sunday and completing a sweep of the GSC/SIAC Classic in Cleveland, Tenn. The Flames scored 50 of their points after halftime, and they finished with a 36-29 rebounding advantage. Parker Suedekum led Lee with 17 points and had three assists, while Michael McGuirk, Ryan Montgomery and Levi Woods each scored 13 points, with Woods grabbing a team-best 10 rebounds and Woods leading with five assists. Louis Blakes and Jeffrey Dockett each scored 22 points and Carl Garcia chipped in 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists for Miles (0-2). The game was tied 29-29 at halftime.
