Around the Region: Schuyler Moore, Destiny Stewart receive All-America honorable mention

Covenant College senior setter Schuyler Moore and Sewanee freshman outside hitter Destiny Stewart received NCAA Division III All-America honorable mention Tuesday from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Moore was a USA South all-conference player for the fourth time and helped lead the Lady Scots to a school-record winning streak and the second round of the national tournament. She was the MVP of the USAS tournament and holds Covenant's record for career assists with 3,830. She totaled 1,348 digs and 657 kills in 131 career matches. Stewart was the South Region freshman of the year and Southern Athletic Association newcomer of the year after a season in which she totaled 424 kills and 4.33 per set, both figures leading the SAA. She had 20 or more kills seven times and three matches with hitting percentages of .528 to .651.

» University of Tennessee at Chattanooga redshirt sophomore Ally Ford was voted to the All-Southern Conference volleyball second team for 2017, and Mocs libero Megan Kaufman made the all-freshman team. Both were in their first year of collegiate competition. Ford, an outside hitter who was sidelined by injuries last season, ranks third in the SoCon with 405 kills and 4.01 kills per set, and she has had at least 20 kills five times. Kaufman has started and totaled double-digit digs in all 30 matches for the Mocs, who play UNC Greensboro in the SoCon tournament Friday night at 7:30 at Cullowhee, N.C. She has totaled 598 digs - second most for a freshman in Division I - with 5.25 per set.

Basketball

» Hunter Simpson led a balanced attack with 11 points as the Tennessee Wesleyan women's basketball team opened Appalachian Athletic Conference play Tuesday night with a 72-36 rout of visiting Montreat. Summer Morris, Madison Walkup and Kaitlin Simon added eight points apiece for the Lady Bulldogs (2-2), and Gina Dick and Hannah Troutt each grabbed seven rebounds. Montreat won the men's game 89-88 despite 19 points by Aundre Reed, 17 by Jalen Oliver, 15 by Johnson Decembre and 14 plus nine rebounds by Andre Applewhite for TWU (2-5, 0-1).

» Reagan Johnson scored 17 points as the Bryan College men improved to 5-1 with a 64-60 win Monday night at Oakwood in Huntsville, Ala. E.J. Bush and Caleb Tuck had 14 and 10 points and seven rebounds each for the Lions, and Oteriah Lee had 13 points and six assists.
