Around the Region: Lee women's soccer team falls on PKs in region final

After advancing on penalty kicks following a 1-1 tie in its previous NCAA Division II tournament game, the Lee University women's soccer team lost 3-1 on PKs after a 1-1 tie Friday in the South Region final against West Florida in Jefferson City, Tenn. That ended the nationally sixth-ranked Lady Flames' season at 17-4-2. Gulf South and South Region player of the year Summer Lanter scored in the 12th minute for Lee, which held that lead until Shantell Thompson's equalizer at 84:50. Lee outshot UWF 25-20, including 15-6 in the first half and 5-1 in the two overtimes, but had nine attempts saved by Katelyn Burkhart. Haley Gribler had seven saves for the Lady Flames. Burkhart stopped two PKs in the shootout, when Thompson, Robyn Herman and Grace Busby converted for UWF. Lauren Peters had Lee's good PK.

-Senior defender Abbie Vibbert and juniors Avery Davis, Mya McGee and Peyton Randolph represented state champion Baylor School on the Division II-AA all-state team released this week by the Tennessee High School Soccer Coaches Association, and Baylor's Curtis Blair was picked by his peers as coach of the year. Junior midfielder Lane Lawrence of GPS also made the 18-player team. Chattanooga Christian senior Olivia Hoffman and juniors Addie Henry and Kate Dirkse made the Division II-A team, which also included Notre Dame senior goalkeeper Lauren Teal. Walker Valley seniors Taylor Ellis and Caitlyn Dickson, Ooltewah junior Addy Keylon and Bradley Central junior Anna Stouffer were among the 51 girls in the Class AAA all-state group, and East Hamilton seniors Lauren Barcelona and Julie Kaset and McMinn Central senior Melia Baker made the 16-player Class AA list.

Volleyball

-The UTC volleyball season ended Friday night in a 3-1 loss to UNC Greensboro in the Southern Conference tournament at Cullowhee, N.C. The set scores were 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16. Ally Ford had 12 kills and 10 digs, Miranda Elpers 11 kills and 21 digs, Lauren Greenspoon 19 assists and 14 digs, Madison Bergren 12 assists and Megan Kaufman 15 digs for UTC (13-18).

-Lee beat West Alabama 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 25-20) in the GSC tournament as Quinne Daoust had 11 kills, Silvia Sartori and Alex Reuter 10 each, Kristi Farley and Sadie Johnson 23 and 21 assists and MaKayla Beebe 30 digs. Lee is 20-9.

Basketball

-Kalin Johnson scored 28 points and Maleek Taylor had 22 points and 11 rebounds as Chattanooga State held off visiting Columbia State in TCCAA men's basketball Friday night, 89-87. A.J. Morris added 17 points for the Tigers (4-1, 2-1). Columbia won the women's game.

-Cleveland State swept visiting Jackson State. Victor Curry had 20 points and 16 rebounds, Tevin Olison and Domont'a' Wright 16 and 13 points and Cam Copeland 10 assists with 11 points in the Cougars' 87-64 men's win. Ebony Kelley and Abby Hubert scored 20 and 18 points and Julia Gaither had 14 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and five steals in the Lady Cougars' 73-71 victory. Hubert also had five thefts.

-The Sewanee women's basketball Tigers rallied to Tracey Braden's first win as their coach, 66-59, with a 21-6 fourth-quarter surge Friday against Maryville at Centre's tournament in Danville, Ky. Bella Taylor had 23 points and three steals for Sewanee (1-1), while Hannah McCormack scored 14 points and Sue Kim made four steals.

-Dalton State pulled out a 78-74 victory over Talladega College in the Life University men's tournament Friday evening in Marietta, Ga. Reed Dungan scored 19 points with 3-of-4 3-point shooting before fouling out for DSC (3-1), and Sean Chisolm and Raheem England had 14 and 12 points and seven rebounds each for the Roadrunners. Isaiah Box, the reigning Southern States Athletic Conference player of the week, had four assists and three steals.

-Oglethorpe defeated visiting Covenant 86-48 in Division III women's basketball. Bekah Walker scored 15 points and Joanna Smith had 14 rebounds with nine points for Covenant (1-1).
