Around the Region: UTC's Lauren Greenspoon is SoCon student-athlete of week

University of Tennessee volleyball setter Lauren Greenspoon is the General Shale Southern Conference student-athlete of the week for Aug. 30-Sept. 5, the league office announced Wednesday. Greenspoon led both tournaments in which the Mocs have participated in assists and leads the SoCon with 271, and she is fourth in UTC history with 2,713 for her career. A senior psychology major, she has a 3.604 cumulative grade point average and had a 3.82 in the 2017 spring semester. "This is a great recognition for Lauren," coach Travis Filar said in a UTC release. "Throughout her career she has been a model student-athlete and an important contributor to our program's on-court success."

* Covenant College won 3-2 Wednesday night against visiting Oglethorpe, with the set scores 25-15, 25-27, 25-16, 20-25, 15-10. Ginny Moore (23 digs, 13 kills) and Schuyler Moore (38 assists) led the Lady Scots, who improved to 2-2.

Soccer

* The Covenant men beat visiting Sewanee 1-0 on Wednesday, with Matt Morefield's first goal of the season coming in the 70th minute and set by a corner kick from Josh Brower. Jonathan Crossman made three saves for the Scots (1-2), while Will Merriman made four for the Tigers (1-2). Covenant finished with a 21-7 edge on shots overall, though that advantage was just 5-3 in shots on goal.

* The Bryan men beat Pikeville 4-1 and the Lady Lions lost 1-0 to Shorter University in a doubleheader Wednesday in Dayton, Tenn. For the Lions (3-2), Keith Lyons, Lewis Perkins, Angel Santiago and Daniel Vonthin had goals, with Lyons and Vonthin also credited with assists. In the women's match, Shorter scored in the 33rd minute, and Bryan (0-2) was unable to take advantage of a 3-1 edge in shots on goal.

* Gabriel Gonzalez had two assists and a goal Wednesday as the Tennessee Wesleyan University men defeated visiting Cumberland 3-1, with Fraser Barlow adding a goal and an assist, George Green also scoring and Nick Croucher making four saves as the Bulldogs (4-1) were outshot 10-5 overall and 5-4 on goal. Later Wednesday, the TWU women lost 2-1 at NCAA Division II member Tusculum. Emiley Saddler scored in the 27th minute for the Lady Bulldogs (1-2), but Tusculum found the net again in the 83rd minute. McKenna Loges made two saves for Tennessee Wesleyan, which was outshot 11-10 overall and 4-2 on goal.

* Lee University's men's match tonight at 7 against Palm Beach Atlantic is now a home game because of the threat of Hurricane Irma. It was scheduled to be played at Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Flames' scheduled game Saturday at Embry-Riddle is canceled.

Outdoors

* Cabela's is holding its Firearm Safety and NRA Weekend this Saturday and Sunday at the store off Interstate 75 at the Cloud Springs Road exit. Free workshops and in-store demonstrations led by National Rifle Association instructors, Cabela's personnel and local experts will be part of the available activities, according to a release, and kids can learn safety basics and shoot at the Daisy BB Gun Range from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Also Saturday, the first 50 customers in the store will receive a free trigger lock donated by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, and free hot dogs will be served from noon to 1 p.m. Anyone who opens or renews an NRA annual membership either day at the store will receive a $25 Cabela's gift card. Legal Heat's Multi-State Concealed-Carry Permit seminar will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday - it costs $75 (see www.MyLegalHeat.com/Cabelas) - and discounts, giveaways and prize-package opportunities will be available both days.
