Around the Region: Vols second to Florida in Carpet Capital golf; Dalton State seventh

Florida leads at 281 after the first round Friday in the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic golf tournament at The Farm in Rocky Face, Ga. Tennessee is one shot behind with freshman Chase Roswall from Baylor School second individually at 67 and teammate Lorenzo Scalise at 68. Led by Chase Cole in a tie for fourth at 69, Dalton State College is seventh at 293 behind Georgia Tech (287), Auburn (289), LSU (292) and South Carolina (292). Also for DSC, Dalton Johnson shot 74, S.M. Lee and Sport Allmond carded 75s and Ben Rebne had a 76. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is 15th at 314 with 36 holes remaining. The Mocs were led by Phillip Hickam with a 75 and Luke Long with a 77, while A.J. Lintunen, Will Porter and Lake Johnson had 81s. Florida's Alejandro Tosti has the individual lead at 66.

-Former Central High School, Cleveland State and Lee University golfer Josh Coley of Mount Juliet eagled his final hole Friday to remain in contention in the 30th Tennessee Mid-Amateur Championship at Spring Creek Ranch in Collierville. He's sixth at 143, three shots out of second place but seven behind leader Matt Cooper of Collierville. Cleveland residents Wes Farris and Hunter Vest are in a group tied for 10th at 145, and David Watts of Benton is tied for 26th at 148.

Soccer

-Catherine Meyer drilled a 20-yard goal from a Jordan Mueller pass in the 81st minute to give UTC a 1-0 women's soccer win Friday at Alabama A&M. UTC (2-3-2) outshot the Bulldogs (0-4) 11-3 with a 6-0 margin in shots on goal. The Mocs' game Sunday at Georgia State has been moved up to 1 p.m.

-Devin Healy scored two goals assisted by McKenzie Bricker as Lee University beat Spring Hill 4-1 in women's soccer Friday at Mobile, Ala. It was 1-1 at halftime, but Lauren Peters scored from Summer Lanter's cross at 62:15 and Healy and Anna Leslie padded the cushion, the latter heading in a pass from Marissa Villafuerte. Lee (2-1) had margins of 32-4 in shots and 11-0 in corner kicks.

-First-half goals by Ruth Rosales and Makena Giles held up for a 2-0 Bryan women's soccer win over visiting Oglethorpe. Ana Ramirez and Anna Sanders had assists for the Lady Lions (1-2), who had a 15-7 edge in shots, 7-2 on goal.

-The Covenant College men's soccer team pulled out its second 1-0 win in three nights Friday, this one at Belhaven in Jackson, Miss. Josh Brower scored in the 20th minute for the Scots (2-2) from an assist by Jesse Riggs.

Volleyball

-The UTC volleyball team's first match in its Scenic City Showdown was a 3-1 defeat of SIU-Edwardsville on Friday evening. Set scores were 20-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21. Ally Ford had 16 kills and 14 digs and Dani Szczepanski, Sarah Root and Miranda Elpers had 12, 10 and nine kills for the Mocs (6-3), who got 46 assists and 10 digs from Lauren Greenspoon, 27 digs from Megan Kaufman and 11 digs and three aces from Elpers. Taylor Joens and Ashley Witt had 13 kills apiece and Samantha Knight had 22 assists and 17 digs for SIUE (5-2).

-Covenant lost 3-2 (20-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-8) to DeSales in the Emory Classic in Atlanta. Schuyler Moore had nine kills, 27 assists and 19 digs while Ginny Moore had nine kills and 32 digs and Allie Jakes also had nine kills for Covenant (2-3), and Hannah Stewart and Emily Moore had 22 and 13 digs.

-Sewanee won 3-0 over both Hollins and Ferrum in the Roanoke College tournament. Destiny Stewart and Stephanie Price had 11 and 10 kills and Olivia Nichols had seven in the 25-18, 25-13, 25-9 rout of Hollins (3-1), when Constance Connolly had 20 assists, Anna Wilson 13 assists and four aces and Peyton Parent 10 digs. In the 25-18, 25-18, 25-20 win over Ferrum, Stewart and Price had 10 and nine kills, Elizabeth Gill added seven and Wilson and Connolly had 13 and 11 assists for the Tigers (2-3).

Fishing

-The ESPNU television shows about Bryan College's national fishing championships last month in Minnesota are set to run at 8 and 9 a.m. Sunday. The Lions' Jacob Foutz from Charleston, Tenn., and Jake Lee from Knoxville won the Carhartt Bassmaster College National Championship together and then separately eliminated other top finishers and met for an individual crown, with Foutz prevailing, in the Carhartt Bassmaster Classic Bracket.
