Hixson resident Ron Lane, owner of Ron's Classic Cars in Soddy-Daisy, won $20,000 in a classic drag race this past Saturday at Memphis International Raceway. He was the runner-up in his Miller rear-end dragster in the Great American Bracket Race, which annually attracts more than 350 drivers from throughout the United States and Canada "to see who the best of the best is," said the 53-year-old Lane. He considers drag racing "a side hobby" but among other accomplishments won the Million Dollar Race in Memphis eight years ago.

* Charlie Hardy from Rome, Ga., was the $5,000 winner in the Super Pro drag-race class Saturday night at Brainerd Motorsports Park. Hardy won the 69-entry class with a 6.65-second run on a 6.64 dial in his 1978 Malibu powered by a 468-cubic-inch Chevrolet engine. Denise Young of Knoxville, the only woman in the class, was second in a 601 Chevy-powered dragster with a 4.49 burst on a 4.49 dial at 145 mph. Tony Brock of Barbourville, Ky., won the Foot Brake class with a 6.27 run on a 6.25 dial in a 1970 Camaro. The son-father combo of David and L.C. Bigham were second and third, David with a 7.85 on a 7.81 in his 1969 Dodge Dart and L.C. with a 9.75 on a 9.74 in a 1978 Plymouth. Logan Grayson of Murfreesboro was the Junior Dragster winner with an 8.73 on an 8.71, and his cousin from Whitwell, Cole Grayson, was second with an 8.68 on an 8.63.

Tennis

* The Chattanooga 3.5 men's 65-over tennis team won the USTA state championship this past weekend in Memphis with a 6-0 record that included only two individual match losses. Captain Tom McCullough and fellow players Richard Campbell, Paul Brown, John Blake, Earl Hereford, Gary Shields, Tom Carter and Tommy Alexander earned a spot in the Southern Sectionals Dec. 1-3 at Hilton Head, S.C.

Soccer

* Covenant College goalkeepers Rachel Lemay and Jonathan Crossman were the USA South soccer defensive players of the week for competition through Sunday. Lemay, a junior from Apopka, Fla., earned the women's honor for the third time in her career after two shutouts with a total of 11 saves in 186 minutes. Crossman, a senior from Lookout Mountain, had two shutouts and a one-goal game in the Scots' 2-1 week, with 12 saves in 270 minutes.

* The Lee University men's soccer game set for tonight at home in Cleveland has been moved to the opponent's field because of the wet weather. The Flames (1-0-2) are set to play at 7 at Young Harris College, ranked 11th in NCAA Division II, in large part because the northeasten Georgia school has an artificial-turf playing surface. Lee had a trip to Daytona Beach, Fla., canceled last week because of Hurricane Irma but picked up one of those matches as a home game. Lee's home volleyball match scheduled Monday against Emory was postponed because of travel issues for the Atlanta team.

Field Hockey

* Sewanee senior goalie Katya Waters was chosen the Southern Athletic Association field hockey defensive player of the week for her play at Richmond, Ind., this past weekend. She made nine saves in a 2-0 win over host Earlham and played 35 minutes without facing a shot in a 4-1 defeat of Oberlin. Waters has a 0.4 goals-against average for the season with 23 saves and only one goal allowed in 175 minutes.

Golf

* Sewanee and Oglethorpe shared the championship of the SAA Men's Golf Preview at the Greystone Club at Dickson, Tenn. It was changed from a two-day event to 36 holes Sunday because of the approaching bad weather, and the Tigers and Stormy Petrels each shot 3-over-par 579. Sewanee, ranked 25th in NCAA Division III, had a 293-294 edge in the first round; the Atlanta school prevailed 285-286 in the final round. Sewanee's Gray Matthews finished second to Huntingdon's Henry Gee individually with a 142, while Tommy Oliver and Nic Vandeventer tied for sixth and eighth at 145 and 146 and Nick Powell tied for 14th at 147. Tigers teammate Basil Boyd played as an individual and tied for third at 143.
