Around the Region: Dalton State's Santiago Moore is NAIA national soccer honoree

Dalton State sophomore forward Santiago Moore is the NAIA men's soccer national offensive player of the week for his play in two overtime wins last week. He already was the Southern States Athletic Conference offensive player of the week. Moore, who's from Queens in New York, scored the winning overtime goal in each game and totaled three goals and three assists. The Roadrunners moved up from 19th to 15th in this week's NAIA coaches' Top 25 poll.

* The Dalton State College women's team beat host St. Andrews 1-0 Wednesday in Laurinburg, N.C. DSC sophomore Keyle Snyder from Ringgold, Ga., scored unassisted in the 12th minute in a game that was otherwise very defensive. Each team had eight shots, with three of them on goal for each as well, and Rachel Hardin made three saves for the Roadrunners (4-1-1). St. Andrews is 0-4.

* Sewanee's men lost 1-0 Wednesday at Piedmont, with the goal scored in the 88th minute when Chase Kane capitalized on a pass from Brandon Ramos. Piedmont finished with a 12-6 edge in shots overall, but each team had three on goal. Sewanee's Will Merriman made a pair of saves, while Piedmont's Elliott Sailes stopped three shots.

* Sewanee's women lost 5-0 to Emory at home Wednesday. Emory (5-2) outshot the Tigers (2-5-1) 28-2 overall and 10-0 on goal.

Cross Country

* University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior cross country runner John Payne is the General Shale Southern Conference student-athlete of the week. Payne, a chemical engineering major with a 4.0 grade point average, finished third individually in Montevallo's Falcon Classic last Saturday and led the Mocs to a second-place finish behind Mississippi State.

Lacrosse

* Sewanee reported Wednesday that Tigers goalie Brianna Young led NCAA Division III in save percentage during the 2017 season. Then a sophomore, she had a .613 percentage (147-for-240) as the Tigers went 13-4.

Volleyball

* Covenant beat visiting Maryville 3-1 Wednesday night in the USA South schedule opener for both teams. Covenant won the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-23, dropped the third 25-23, then won the fourth 25-21 to even its overall season mark at 6-6 and drop Maryville to 3-8. Covenant's Ginny Moore and Hannah Stewart each had 26 digs to lead the team - Moore also had a game-best 19 kills - Schuyler Moore set the assists pace with 43, Chloe Storm added 11 kills and Hannah Harris 10.

* Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball leader Union College beat Tennessee Wesleyan University 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-16) on Tuesday in Barbourville, Ky. Marjorie Smith, Maura Emert and Avery Hilliard each had six kills for TWU (4-10, 0-4), which got 12 assists and 10 digs from Tia Madden, 10 assists from Gabi Catt and 12 digs from Elizabeth Houk. Union is 15-4, 5-0.

* Point University freshman Te'a Owens from Ridgeland High School had six kills, with no attack errors, and three blocks in a 3-0 AAC home win (25-18, 25-18, 25-13) against Allen University on Tuesday.

* Cleveland State's first-year team hosted and beat Bryan's junior varsity 3-2 on Wednesday night, with Cleveland State dropping the first set 25-18, winning the next two 25-16 and 26-24, dropping the fourth 25-23, then winning the fifth 15-8. Cleveland State improved to 8-3. Bryan's JV is now 3-4.

Softball

* The King's Men slowpitch softball team based at Lookout Valley Baptist Church won the WSL Summer Closer last weekend in McMinnville, Tenn. The King's Men went 4-1 in the six-team tournament, avenging a loss to ADL of Morristown in the winners-bracket final by winning 24-14 and 25-24 for the championship. The Chattanooga team trailed 21-10 and 23-15 in that last game before taking the lead in the sixth inning.
