Area Sports Notes: Softball Mocs win 5-3 at Western Carolina

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team won 5-3 at Western Carolina in the first game of their Southern Conference series Saturday. The scheduled second game was pushed back into a doubleheader today. Celie Hudson (7-10) was the winning pitcher with 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief, and Brook Womack was 2-for-3 with the Mocs' first and last RBIs of the game. Ashley Conner hit a two-run double and scored twice, and Hayleigh Weissenbach and J.J. Hamill each was 2-for-4 with one and two runs scored for UTC (17-22, 3-4).

' Taylor Moran was 4-for-4 with her 11th home run of the season and four RBIs and Brooklynn Frazier was 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored as host Lee University edged nationally 14th-ranked West Florida 8-7 in the opener of their Gulf South Conference softball series Saturday. Kayla Gooch was 2-for-3 and scored a run and Lily Hatcher scored twice for Lee (19-22, 8-12), which led 8-4 after a four-run fourth inning. Jacquelynne Poling, Tiona Hill and Kathleen Smiley homered for UWF (21-12, 12-8).

' Olivia Johnson pitched a four-hitter as Bryan College beat visiting Columbia (S.C.) 15-0 in five innings in an Appalachian Athletic Conference game. Game two was called off. Hannah O'Shields homered, doubled and batted in three runs, Sydney Olander tripled and also had three RBIs and Ashley Brown was 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs for the Lady Lions (11-26, 8-9), while Marissa Murray had two hits and two RBIs and Lindsey Dunn added a two-run triple.

' Sewanee began a Southern Athletic Association softball home series Saturday with a 13-4 loss to Millsaps. Hailey Pearson and Jordan Lipari each batted in three runs and M.K. Bozeman was 3-for-3 and scored four for the visitors, while Charlsey Shirey was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Amanda Watters was 2-for-3 and scored twice for Sewanee (4-25, 1-12).

' Cleveland State's softball games Saturday against Volunteer State were canceled because of unplayable conditions. Chattanooga State's softball and baseball series at Columbia State both were pushed back to today and Monday.

Baseball

' West Florida rallied for a 5-3 GSC baseball win Saturday at Lee. The teams will play a doubleheader today. Miguel Pimentel was 2-for-3 and Tyler Payne and Dalton Ney each was 2-for-4 for Lee (20-17, 12-7), Payne scoring two runs and batting in one. Starting pitcher Wes Albert allowed six hits and two runs, one earned, in his 6 1/3 innings. Jacob Silverstein drove in two runs, Robert Lopez scored three and Matthew Estrada was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the 23rd-ranked Argonauts (24-10, 14-4).

' Cleveland State completed a TCCAA series sweep of Volunteer State with a 12-8 victory Saturday on Logan Peterson's game-ending grand slam after a one-out intentional walk to Hunter Oliver. Peterson was 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double, two walks, seven RBIs and three runs scored and Oliver was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two walks and four runs for the Cougars (27-14, 9-9), while Brandon Mason was 2-for-5 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs. Collin Grove struck out seven batters in 5 1/3 innings of relief, and Greg Tye (4-0) pitched the last 1 2/3 with two strikeouts and only one hit allowed for the win.

' Covenant College had all six of the runs scored Saturday in defeating Brevard 8-3 in the game suspended Friday on Lookout Mountain. Its resumption was delayed two hours by fog and was called after 4 1/2 innings because of rain and more fog, and the scheduled three-game series ended there. Christian Murray was 1-for-2 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs and Devin Cerrato was 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, an RBI and a run for the Scots (11-21). Tyler Murray scored twice and drove in a run, and Matt Reitz (4-3) allowed two hits and struck out six batters in his three innings pitched.

' The NAIA's 10th-ranked Bryan Lions won 7-4 and lost 12-5 against visiting Point in AAC baseball Saturday. Bryan is 30-9 overall, 14-4 in AAC games. Wade Weinburger was 3-for-4 and scored two runs and Fernando Garcia homered and singled and drove in four runs in the win for Bryan, while Trevor Behrent and Rodney Tennie each also had two hits and Behrent scored twice. Weinburger plated two runs with his 11th homer of the season in the Lions' loss, and Cody Young homered and singled, Garcia doubled and singled and Tennie stole four bases.

Track & Field

' UTC's Emily Poole finished fifth in the women's 5000-meter run Saturday at the chilly Crimson Tide Invitational at Tuscaloosa, Ala. Her time of 17:25.26 was a personal best by 3.54 seconds. Former UTC runner Lucas Cotter, competing unattached, was ninth in the men's 5000.

Lacrosse

' Freshman Becca Broadwick had eight goals, two assists and nine draw controls in Lee's 26-2 home lacrosse win Saturday against Truett McConnell. She has 55 goals for the Lady Flames (8-7). Brianne Schapira scored four goals and Emma Hill, Madeline Perrigo, Adriana DeVita and Kaylyn Dillon added two apiece, Hill with two assists and the other three with one each. Lee outshot the Bears 42-5.
