Area Sports Notes: Softball Mocs' streak is at five

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team won 10-2 and 4-2 in Southern Conference play Sunday at Western Carolina to sweep the three-game series in Cullowhee, N.C., and run its winning streak to five games. In the first game, Ashley Conner, Alyssa Coppinger, Katie Corum and Brook Womack homered for the Mocs (19-22, 5-4). Womack went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, J.J. Hamill was 2-for-4 and drove in a run, and Celie Hudson (8-10) pitched for the win. In the second game, Conner, Coppinger and Aly Walker each had two hits - with the latter two driving in a run apiece - and Allison Swinford (7-9) was the winning pitcher.

» Lee University split Sunday's Gulf South Conference doubleheader with West Florida, losing 6-2 but winning 8-1 for the 600th victory of former Lady Flames standout Emily Russell's coaching career. In the victory, Leigh Beatenbough (10-8) was the winning pitcher - she took a no-hitter into the fifth inning - and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Kayla Gooch was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Taylor Moran had a three-run homer for Lee (20-23, 9-15). West Florida is 22-13, 13-9.

» Tennessee Wesleyan swept a home doubleheader Sunday against Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Columbia (S.C.), 10-1 in five innings and 8-0 in six. Laken Collier, Briana Muller and Allee West each had two RBIs for the Lady Bulldogs (19-13, 12-6) in the first game, when Muller, Olivia Housewright and Baylee Sutton had two hits apiece, and Rachel Mathews was the winning pitcher. In the second game, Sutton was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Courtney Black was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Muller drove in two runs, Mackenzie Jackson and West each went 2-for-3 and Courtney Calkins pitched for the win as Columbia fell to 7-18, 4-13.

» Sewanee dropped a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader Sunday to Millsaps, 10-1 in five innings and 6-2, getting swept in the three-game series to fall to 4-27, 1-14. The Tigers' Katie Roth went 3-for-4 in the finale. Millsaps is 17-14, 5-9.

Golf

» The UTC women were tied for second after Sunday's opening round at the Brickyard Collegiate in Macon, Ga., with Monica San Juan shooting a 1-over-par 73 and tied for fourth and Mocs teammate Cristina Perez (74) tied for 10th. Vanderbilt led at 294, with UTC, Old Dominion and Virginia Tech eight strokes back in the 14-team event. Three golfers were tied for first at 72.

Baseball

» Lee split a home doubleheader with West Florida on Sunday, losing 7-2 before winning 10-2 to avoid a sweep in the three-game GSC series. Jordan Howard had three RBIs for the Flames (21-18, 13-8) as he homered twice Sunday, once in each game, and Spencer Mossburg had a two-run homer in the win. West Florida is 25-11, 15-5.

» Drew Mancuso pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts as Sewanee edged Millsaps 1-0 Saturday in the opener of their SAA series in Jackson, Miss., and the Tigers won 7-5 and 2-0 Sunday to sweep. The Tigers had only one hit Saturday, by Riley Brandvold in the fifth inning, but he scored on a Chris McNulty groundout in the first after walking and moving around on two wild pitches. On Sunday, Brandvold's homer and RBI singles by Trey Akins and Mancuso broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth during the first game, when Akins was 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Outhit 5-3 in the second game, the Tigers (12-19, 6-0) scored twice in the fifth when Jake Woolard was hit by a pitch and Jared Demkowicz walked with the bases loaded. Millsaps is 19-16, 8-10.

Lacrosse

» Sewanee's men beat visiting Hendrix 14-2 in SAA play Sunday. Hayden Hunt and Thomas Oliver had three goals apiece, Daniel Burnum added three assists and two goals, Wil Friedman tallied six groundballs and Taylor Noack made seven saves for the Tigers (8-5, 4-1) against Hendrix (6-9, 1-4).

» Sewanee's women lost 19-8 in SAA play Sunday at Centre. Preston Cooper scored twice for the Tigers (11-5, 3-1), who took 16 shots on goal compared to 31 for Centre (12-1, 4-0).
