Area Sports Notes: UTC men's golfers finish third in Ryman Hospitality tourney

Led by a 5-under-par 66 from Luke Long, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team surged Tuesday to a third-place finish of 874 for 54 holes in the Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate tournament at Nashville's Richland Country Club. Rice won at 860, and host Lipscomb was second in the 14-team field at 865. Also in UTC's final-round 286, Will Porter shot 72, Etienne Brault 73 and Lake Johnson 75. Long finished fifth individually at 213, Johnson tied for 12th at 219, Porter shared 22nd at 223 and Andrew Weathers shot 226.

» The UTC women's golfers shot a 305 Tuesday in the Brickyard Collegiate at Macon, Ga., and finished seventh out of 14 teams at 916. The Mocs' Monica San Juan tied for 17th individually at 225, and Cristina Perez, Holly Morgan and Megan Woods shot 230, 231 and 232. Vanderbilt was the team winner at 869.

» Mike Nance of Calhoun and Dalton Golf & Country Club is tied for fourth after the first day of stroke-play qualifying for the 2018 GSGA Senior Match Play Championship at the Savannah Golf Club. Nance and defending champion Wright Waddell shot 74s, two behind leader Jack Kearney of Broelinn GC. The low 16 players after today's round will advance to match play.

Tennis

» The UTC women's tennis team edged visiting Mercer 4-3 in a Southern Conference match Tuesday. UTC (9-6, 4-2) won the doubles point with two victories and then got wins at Nos. 4-6 singles from Tamri Chalaganidze, Emma Van Hee and Bogdana Zaporozhets to seal the team triumph. Freshmen Van Hee and Zaporozhets also had won in doubles with senior Samantha Caswell and junior Caroline Hall.

» Sewanee's nationally 22nd-ranked men's tennis team won for the seventh time in a row Tuesday but was challenged in the 6-3 victory by Covenant's Scots, who are 15-4 and regionally ranked. The two veterans at the top of the Covenant lineup, Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox, won together and in singles, while Alejandro Becker, Aubrey Davis, Fletcher Kerr and Davis Owen won for Sewanee (17-4) at Nos. 3-6. The schools' women's match was canceled.

Baseball

» Lee University overcame a three-run first inning for Trevecca Nazarene and won 4-3 in nonconference baseball Tuesday, as Christian Bokich pitched six hitless innings with eight strikeouts in relief. Justen Freeman hit a two-run double and Tyler Payne was 2-for-4 with what turned out to be the winning RBI for the Flames (22-18). Thomas Zazzaro had the tying RBI and scored twice.

» Cumberland University outlasted 10th-ranked host Bryan 8-6 in NAIA baseball Tuesday. The Phoenix (28-11) got the last out with the bases loaded with Lions, who totaled only six hits but accepted 10 walks. Wade Weinburger had a two-run home run and Trevor Behrent had two hits for Bryan (30-10). Carlos Moseley batted in three runs with two singles and Rayden Sierra and Jordan Hunt homered for Cumberland.

» Covenant College followed a 7-4 loss Tuesday at Berry (24-11) with an 8-3 win as C.J. Edmond was 2-for-3 with two doubles and scored three runs, John Mitchell had two hits and two RBIs, Ken Alexander also had two RBIs and Joel Johnson was 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and an RBI. Drew Bradley got the pitching win with a two-inning save for Matt Reitz. In the loss for the Scots (12-22), Caleb Bloye was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer.

Softball

» Lee's Taylor Moran from Silverdale Baptist Academy was chosen the Gulf South Conference softball player of the week after going 12-for-20 with three homers, two doubles and 11 RBIs as the Lady Flames won three of five games. Moran leads the GSC with 59 hits, 13 homers, 108 total bases and 55 RBIs and is batting .450 with 11 doubles and 25 walks.

» Tennessee Wesleyan downed visiting Milligan 5-0 and 11-7 in Appalachian Athletic Conference softball Tuesday. Rachel Mathews pitched a three-hitter in game one, when Allee West hit a three-run triple, Baylee Sutton drove in two runs and Brianna Muller was 2-for-2 and scored a run for TWU (21-13, 14-6). Sutton and Courtney Black each was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the rematch, and Olivia Housewright and Laken Collier each was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

» Brenau edged Reinhardt 5-3 and 8-7 in AAC softball Sunday but lost 10-1 and 4-3 Tuesday at Montreat. Soddy-Daisy graduate Savannah Moore hit the go-ahead two-run single for Brenau in the first game Sunday and then was 2-for-3 with a double, another two RBIs and two runs scored, including the game-winner in the ninth inning. She had scored on East Hamilton alumna Kelsey Payne's sacrifice fly in the seventh to force extra innings. Payne was 1-for-2 and scored on Moore's hit in game one and was 3-for-4 and scored twice in game two. Tuesday, Payne was 2-for-3 with a double in the first loss for the Golden Tigers (20-13, 9-5).

Lacrosse

» Roderick Williams scored six goals and Kalen Fearing added five as Tennessee Wesleyan beat visiting Union College 18-6 in AAC men's lacrosse Tuesday. Dalton O'Connell Zradicka had three goals and an assist for TWU (6-7, 3-2). Wesleyan junior Jacob Brown was the AAC defensive player of the week for his 22 draw controls, 13 ground balls, four goals and an assist in his two matches last week.
