Area Sports Notes: UTC ties for second in SoCon women's golf tournament

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga finished second to Furman in the Southern Conference women's golf tournament for the fourth consecutive year Tuesday, this time tied with Mercer at 931 on Hilton Head Island. Furman, ranked eighth nationally, shot 897. UTC's Monica San Juan was seventh individually at 231, Holly Morgan and Megan Woods tied for ninth at 233 and Cristina Perez tied for 13th at 235.

» The UTC men's golfers finished 10th in the 15-team Old Waverly Collegiate at West Point, Miss., with a 296 Tuesday capping a 54-hole 909. Tenth-ranked LSU won at 855. UTC's Andrew Weathers tied for 42nd at 228 with Etienne Brault and Lake Johnson at 230, Luke Long at 231 and Will Porter at 232.

» The Dalton State men added to their lead Tuesday in the second round of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery, Ala. The Roadrunners, ranked third in the NAIA, are at 577 and 20 strokes ahead of second-place William Carey with S.M. Lee the individual leader at 138, P.J. Shields tied for second at 145, Dalton Johnson at 147 after a 70, Ben Rebne at 148 and Chase Cole at 150. Also Tuesday, Lee was named SSAC men's golfer of the week for the fourth time this season for his victory last week in the Roadrunner Classic at The Farm, and DSC's Tia Teiniketo from Baylor School was the women's honoree for her five-stroke triumph at the RedHawk Spring Classic.

Baseball

» Spencer Mossburg homered twice and batted in four runs and Miguel Pimentel doubled twice and knocked in two, but their Lee University Flames lost 9-7 in a nonconference NCAA Division II baseball game Tuesday night at Tusculum. Justen Freeman walked three times and scored twice for Lee (23-20).

» No. 23 Tennessee Wesleyan welcomed its return to the NAIA baseball Top 25 by edging Cumberland 7-6 on a Tyler Halas infield single in the ninth inning Tuesday in Athens. It was his second hit of the game. Also for TWU (28-17), Tristan Clarke was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, Dakota Phillips homered and scored two runs, Braden Mosley batted in two and Malik Stephens was 2-for-4.

» Covenant College edged visiting Birmingham-Southern 7-6 in Division III baseball as C.J. Edmond went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs and Caleb Bloye went 3-for-4 with an RBI double, two stolen bases and three runs scored. John Mitchell scored two and also stole two for the Scots (13-22). Dawson Pfost had two doubles and three RBIs for BSC (21-15).

Softball

» Tennessee Wesleyan totaled 26 hits in winning 1-0 and 10-7 in Appalachian Athletic Conference softball Tuesday at Bryan. Rachel Mathews pitched a two-hitter in the first game for the second-place Lady Bulldogs (25-15, 18-6), while Baylee Sutton went 3-for-4, Laken Collier was 2-for-3 and Briana Muller had the RBI. Muller had four RBIs with two hits and Sutton and Courtney Black were each 3-for-4 with three and two RBIs in game two. Rachel Percy was 3-for-3 and matched Olivia Housewright and Mackenzie Jackson with two runs scored. For Bryan (12-31, 9-14), Hannah O'Shields was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, Heidi Smith was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Sydney Olander also scored twice.

» The Southern Athletic Association's double-elimination softball tournament at Warner Park begins Thursday with two noon games and Sewanee playing at 2 p.m. in Frost Stadium. Tickets cost $5 per day or $3 for students (under 18) or seniors (65-older); tournament passes are $10, $5 for children.

Track & Field

» Soddy-Daisy's Kelsey Henderson, McMinn County's Paige Manny and Rhea County's Sarah Welch finished first, second and third in the Large class pentathlon sectional Monday at Stewart's Creek, assuring spots for Henderson (2,712 points) and Manny (2,610) in the state finals March 17 at Austin Peay. Welch could still get a berth also. Henderson ran the 100-meter hurdles in 16.2 seconds and the 800 in 2:48, high-jumped 4-10, shot-putted 29-4 and long-jumped 16 feet.
