Area Sports Notes: Eight going into Lookout Mountain Hall of Fame

The Lookout Mountain Sports Hall of Fame inductees for 2018 include tennis notables Kappie Clark Boles, Elisabeth Donnovin, Pem Guerry and Jack Webb; All-American swimmer Caroline Caulkins Bentley; NFL official Lee Dyer; longtime wrestling coach Schaack Van Deusen; and media representative B.B. Branton. The induction ceremony is set for Sunday, May 6, at 3 p.m. in the Lookout Mountain School gym. Bentley, Boles and Donnovin went to Girls Preparatory School; Guerry, Dyer and Van Deusen to Baylor; Webb and Branton to McCallie. All eight already are Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame selections, with Chattanoogan.com reporter and former Chattanooga Free Press writer Branton being inducted in two weeks.

Guerry is a four-time national champion, including as captain of a Baylor national titlist, and was a conference doubles champ for an SMU team that finished third in the NCAA. Boles was a five-time GPS MVP and a four-time City singles champ who won five TSSAA state titles, was ranked as high as No. 3 nationally as a junior and became the team MVP at Virginia.

Donnovin won TSSAA singles and doubles titles and the Southern 18s singles championship and was a Prince High School All-American and North Carolina signee. Webb, who was All-SEC for Kentucky and a national grass court doubles champion in 1978, won two city singles and seven city doubles titles and was a four-time Southern clay court doubles champ (in 18s, 40s and twice in 50s). Bentley was a two-time high school All-American and three-time high-point swimmer in the Chattanooga Area Swim League and competed collegiately at Brenau.

Van Deusen lettered in football, baseball, tennis and wrestling at Baylor and went on to wrestle at Virginia, where he also was an intramural champ, and he was a head coach or prominent assistant in the wrestling programs at Baylor and Notre Dame for 40 years. Dyer came from Trenton and earned 10 letters in football, swimming and baseball at Baylor, batting .358 and all-city as a senior, and played four years of baseball at UTC, and he became a longtime prep and college football official who moved on to the NFL.

-Dyer will be the speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $12 with a meal, $4 without. Dyer has worked NFL games for 15 years.

Basketball

-A.J. Morris scored 23 points with four 3-point baskets as Chattanooga State edged visiting Cleveland State 70-68 in TCCAA men's basketball Saturday afternoon. In the men's game, Raekwon Long scored all 13 of his points in the second half as the host and third-place Tigers (15-8, 10-4) overcame a 35-29 deficit. Kalin Johnson and Maleek Taylor scored 11 and 10. For the Cougars (11-10, 7-7), Victor Curry scored 15, Cam Copeland and Collin Herron each had 12 with four 3s and Delaino Walker tallied 10.

-Lee University clinched a spot in the Gulf South Conference women's basketball tournament with a 60-47 home win Saturday against Christian Brothers, and Lee also won the men's game, 84-74. For the Lady Flames (19-6, 12-5), Erin Walsh had 14 points with four 3-pointers and eight rebounds, Lindsey Roddy scored 11 points and Maddie Long and Shelby Brown added 10 each, Long with five assists. Colton Blevins contributed 18 points and six assists for the Flames (13-11, 8-9), and Ryan Montgomery and Cody Jones scored 14 and 12 points.

-The Covenant College basketball teams won their USA South games Saturday, the men 76-64 at home against Ferrum and the Lady Scots 62-52 at Agnes Scott. James Mitchell and Berto Dryden scored 24 and 21 points with eight and five 3s for the Scots (15-8, 10-5). For the Covenant women (13-11, 8-6), who are seeded fifth for the league tournament and will play Wednesday at No. 4 seed Huntingdon, Jessica Bell and Kaley Hallmark had 18 and 14 points with seven rebounds apiece and four and three steals. Bekah Walter added 13 points. Hallmark and Emma Grimes had 22 and 18 points with five and six 3s and five and six assists in Friday's win at Wesleyan (Ga.).

-Appalachian Athletic Conference women's leader Bryan College lost 74-68 at Brenau on Saturday by being outscored 28-9 in the fourth quarter. That still leaves the Lady Lions (21-7, 18-4) one game up on Reinhardt (17-5) with two regular-season games remaining. Deandra Luna hit five 3s and had 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in defeat, while Amber Levi and Shayla Ludy scored 16 and 12 points and Keneisha Love had 10 rebounds. Brenau is 19-7, 14-7.

-Dalton State lost for the second time in three days in Southern States Athletic Conference men's basketball Saturday, 93-84 at Blue Mountain, but is 19-6 and 11-3 in the league.

Baseball

-Lee lost 3-2 and 4-2 in its baseball doubleheader Saturday at Saint Leo in Florida. Miguel Pimentel was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Peyton Meeker and Chase Gadau also had two hits each for the Flames (2-3) in the first game, when starting pitcher Eric Freeman allowed two runs in seven innings, with the score tied at 2. Pimentel was 2-for-3 and Gadau and Meeker had RBIs in game two.

-Roy Dietzel, who played for the Chattanooga Lookouts in the 1951-55 seasons and ascended to the major leagues with the Washington Senators, died early this month at his residence in Charlotte, N.C. He was 87 and survived by his wife of 64 years.

Tennis

-The UTC men's tennis team beat North Alabama 6-1 on Saturday at Manker Patten with straight-sets singles wins from Niklas Gerdes, Simon Bustamante, Luke Plaisted, Jacob Marshall and Cooper Long. Gerdes and Bustamante won together in doubles, as did Plaisted and Pablo Llebeili. The Mocs (4-5) later beat NAIA member Tennessee Wesleyan 5-2 with Gerdes, Llebeili, Plaisted and Marshall winning singles. Frederico Staksrud and Fabrizio Tormen won in singles for TWU (1-1), and Staksrud also won in doubles with Borja Perez.

Fishing

-Wesley Strader of Spring City finished 31st and earned $10,000 Saturday with a three-day total of 32 pounds, 14 ounces of fish on Alabama's Lake Martin in his first tournament as a full-time member of the Bassmaster Elite Series. He is a veteran of the FLW Tour. Takahiro Omoro of Texas leads the 12 finalists today with 45-8.
