Celie Hudson pitched a five-hitter as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team concluded the Chattanooga Challenge with a 2-1 victory Sunday against Tennessee State. Hudson outdueled the Tigers' Erica O'Kane from Marion County, who also allowed five hits. Emma Sturdivant was 2-for-3 with a home run for UTC (4-5), and Amanda Beltran was 1-for-2 with the winning RBI single in the sixth inning.

» Lee University freshman pitcher Shonna Penney from Soddy-Daisy lost a six-hitter on an unearned run Sunday as the Lady Flames fell 1-0 to Montevallo in the final day of the Gulf South Conference Opening Weekend Festival in Montgomery, Ala. Abby McKinney and Bailey Church had two singles each for Lee (7-5, 2-1).

» After losing its first three games in Georgia Gwinnett's tournament - all to the seventh-ranked hosts - the Bryan College softball team closed with a 1-0 win over West Virginia Tech in which Lindsey Dunn pitched an eight-inning two-hitter and Hannah O'Shields went 2-for-3. Allison Walker was 1-for-2 with a double and scored the winning run. The first loss to the undefeated Grizzlies was 4-2, and Leslie Beecham was 2-for-2 with an RBI in that game for Bryan (1-5).

Basketball

» Bryan's loss and Reinhardt's win in final games Saturday put the two in a tie for the Appalachian Athletic Conference women's basketball regular-season championship, and they will play off for that distinction tonight at 7 at Tennessee Wesleyan in Athens. At stake will be not only the No. 1 seeding for the AAC tournament but also an automatic berth in the NAIA Division II national tournament.

» Sewanee lost its final regular-season basketball games Saturday at Centre, 61-56 in the women's contest and 76-64 in the men's matchup of first- and second-place Southern Athletic Association teams. Adrian Thomas had 26 points on 13-of-16 shooting and 16 rebounds and Luke Smith scored 20 points for the Sewanee men (14-10, 10-4), who will play seventh seed Hendrix in the SAA tournament Friday at Centre. Bella Taylor and Hannah McCormack scored 14 and 11 points for the Sewanee women (10-14, 5-9), who will play No. 2 seed Rhodes in the women's tournament Friday at Oglethorpe.

Baseball

» Cleveland State downed Vincennes 10-1 and 6-5 in home baseball games Sunday. Hooper Mills struck out eight batters in six innings in the opener, when Trey Martin and Noah Hill homered and the Cougars (4-2) had a six-run fourth inning. Hill was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Cameron Hankins was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Martin and Joey Roberson each was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Hunter Oliver hit a two-run homer and Cameron Payne was 2-for-3 in game two.

Swimming

» Sewanee's Lee Haber won the men's 200-yard breaststroke Saturday as the SAA swimming and diving meet wrapped up at Birmingham, and Noel Whitlock was second in women's 3-meter diving and qualified for regional competition. Jed Henrichsen was second in the men's 3-meter after a third in 1-meter earlier in the meet. Carl Failing and James Hoyt set school records in the 100 backstroke and 1650 freestyle, respectively, and Failing, Andrew Freibert, Jacob Finco and Haber set another in the 400 free relay.

Lacrosse

» Becca Broadwick scored five goals, including the match winner, as the second-year Lee University lacrosse team improved to 2-0 with a 12-11 victory Saturday at Erskine. Madeline Perrigo scored three goals and Rachel Duda added two.

» The Sewanee men's lacrosse team won 10-7 over Guilford and 9-8 in overtime against Southwestern (Texas) in home matches this past weekend. Hayden Hunt scored four goals and Thomas Lynde and Cameron Acuff each had two plus an assist against Guilford for the Tigers (2-1). Lynde, Hunt and Daniel Burnum scored two goals apiece against Southwestern, and Jimmy Parker netted the overtime winner. The Sewanee women lost 16-6 in their season opener Saturday at Rhodes; Preston Cooper scored two goals in defeat.
