Area Sports Notes: UTC men's tennis team loses 7-0 at MTSU

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team began the 2018 part of its schedule Monday with a 7-0 loss at Middle Tennessee State. The UTC women's scheduled match at Austin Peay was postponed because of inclement weather and reset for Feb. 4 in Clarksville. UTC junior Niklas Gerdes gave MTSU's Tom Moonen a tough match but lost 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles. Gerdes and his teammates will host Lee University at 6 p.m. Friday in McCallie's Strang-Voges indoor facility.

Basketball

» One day after her program-record 40 points in a win at Berry College, Sewanee junior Bella Taylor from Sparta, Tenn., was honored as the Southern Athletic Association women's basketball player of the week for the second time this season. Taylor also had 17 points and five assists against Welch and 12 points and four assists against Oglethorpe during the past week. She leads the SAA with 20.1 points per game.

» Because of the expectation of snow, the Covenant College women's home basketball game against Maryville scheduled for tonight has been postponed until Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., ahead of the men's game against Piedmont.

» Georgia Tech signee Elizabeth Balogun had 20 points and 11 rebounds as ESPN's nationally second-ranked Hamilton Heights Lady Hawks completed their run in the Music City Classic on Monday with a 51-37 defeat of Kentucky's No. 1 team, Mercer County, No. 12 nationally.
