The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's athletic department and its Office of Development and Alumni Affairs have announced five new members for the UTC Athletics Hall of Fame.
In addition, four special award winners were announced Friday. They will also be honored during the induction ceremony Feb. 16 at Chattanooga Country Club.
The inductees are Tony Hill (football), Jeff Rufolo (wrestling), Sabine ter Riet Brent (women's tennis), Bill Tym (tennis) and Miranda Warfield (women's basketball). Award winners are Dean and Mary Jane Heavener (Gordon Davenport Award), Larry Stewart (Joe Morrison Award), Scottie Boykin (Scrappy Moore Award) and Dewayne Gass (Harold Wilkes Award).
"There are outstanding individuals in this year's group of Hall of Fame inductees and award winners," UTC vice chancellor and athletic director Mark Wharton said in a release. "Collectively, they have represented UTC athletics in an exemplary fashion and we are excited to celebrate their successes, achievements and contributions to the Mocs."
Hill was a standout linebacker from 1987 to '90 and an All-American his final season. He was a fourth-round pick for the Dallas Cowboys in 1991, the fourth-highest NFL draft selection in program history.
Rufolo was a three-time Southern Conference champion at 190 pounds, with league titles and NCAA tournament appearances in 1985, '87 and '88. He finished 74-34-3 in his UTC career and helped the Mocs win three SoCon team titles.
Ter Riet helped the Mocs with three consecutive NCAA Division II championships (1983-85). The two-time All-American won a SoCon singles title in 1985 with an 18-1 record and a final national ranking of 28th. She also went 20-0 in doubles and was ranked 19th, winning a league title with Heidi Narborough as a senior.
In 10 seasons as the men's tennis head coach, Tym helped produce numerous Division II All-Americans. He also led the Mocs to the 1979 SoCon men's championship while coaching the women to their third consecutive AIAW national title.
Warfield was a two-time SoCon tournament MVP, a three-time all-conference selection and a three-time SoCon all-tournament team pick. In program history, she is 11th with 1,375 points and fifth with 170 3-pointers, which was a school record at the end of her career. She was a member of the 2004 team that defeated Rutgers in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Boykin, a UTC senior, is a nationally ranked wrestler with 88 career wins who was an All-SoCon selection each of his first three seasons. The Heaveners are longtime supporters of the women's basketball program. Stewart is the longtime general manager of the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox Youth Foundation and was a former UTC men's basketball standout. Gass has served as the Moc Maniac at UTC home games for more than 30 years.
