Area Sports Notes: UTC runners have four top-10 finishes in Samford meet

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Emily Poole and Hannah Caldwell finished fourth and ninth in the women's 3000-meter run Saturday in the Samford Open indoor track and field meet at the Birmingham Crossplex, and Abby Bateman was fifth in the 800. Brianna Nelson gave the Mocs' a fourth top-10 finish with an eighth place in the mile run. Poole's 3k time was 10:23.26. Samford's Selena Popp from Baylor School won the women's indoor pentathlon Thursday night with first-place finishes in long jump and high jump, second in the 800 and fourth in shot put.

Basketball

-The Covenant College men's basketball team won 105-101 over previously undefeated Pfeiffer (11-1) on Saturday on Lookout Mountain, as James Mitchell scored 21 points with seven 3-point baskets and Caleb Haynes and Berto Dryden scored 20 each. Haynes was 9-of-9 from the field and Dryden hit four 3s and added six assists for the Scots (8-7), while Bailey Spragg contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Jon Jauch delivered seven assists.

-The Lee University women's basketball team won its seventh straight game Saturday with a 68-52 home defeat of Mississippi College, but the Lee men lost 87-75 in the Gulf South Conference doubleheader. Carrie Cheeks was 11-of-14 from the field in scoring 25 points, and she had seven offensive rebounds in her total of 10 for the Lady Flames (16-3, 9-2). Shelby Brown was 6-of-7 and 4-for-4 on 3s in totaling 16 points, putting her at 1,008 for her Lee career, and Abby Bertram and Lindsey Roddy provided seven and five assists. In defeat for the Flames (11-7, 6-5), Ryan Montgomery had 16 points and nine rebounds and Bryce Copeland and Michael McGuirk each scored 11 points. Brandon Boston scored 32 for Mississippi College.

-Reed Dungan scored 26 points as Dalton State won 99-78 in Southern States Athletic Conference men's basketball Saturday at Mobile. Raheem England had 15 points and Isaiah Box, Carnilious Simmons and Aaron Burress added 13, 11 and 10 for the Roadrunners (15-4, 8-1), ranked 13th in NAIA Division I. They led 51-34 at halftime.

-The Bryan College women are in first place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference at 12-2 (15-5 overall) after a 98-63 home win over Columbia (S.C.) in which Amber Levi had 20 points and seven rebounds and Karli Combs scored 16 points with four 3s. Tristan McClellan scored 14 and Tonesha Allison collected 11 rebounds for the Lady Lions.

-The AAC's second-place Tennessee Wesleyan women defeated visiting Allen 79-69 on Saturday, and the Allen men won 90-82. For the Lady Bulldogs (13-5, 12-3), Hunter Simpson made 18 free throws and had 22 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and three steals and Hannah Cherry scored 21 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field. Madison Walkup added 14 points and eight rebounds. The TWU men got 26 points from Jalen Oliver, 18 points and 10 rebounds from Johnson Decembre, 11 points from Andre AppleWhite and 16 rebounds with 10 points from Kenny Dean.

-UTC women's basketball assistant coach Katie Burrows will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Southside Social near Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $12 with a meal, $4 without. Those attending are asked to park in the gravel lot between Southside Social and the apartment complex under construction at the corner of Chestnut and 20th streets. Enter the building through the gate adjacent to the lot's handicap spaces. Burrows is a former Lookout Valley and UTC standout.

Tennis

-Freshman Cooper Long won 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 6 singles in the UTC men's tennis team's 6-1 loss Saturday night at Alabama. The Crimson Tide swept the doubles matches and won in straight sets in all the singles contests except Long's, but the Mocs' Niklas Gerdes battled 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 1 in a loss to Mazen Osama.

Golf

-Beck Burnette of Blairsville was honored Saturday at the Georgia State Golf Association awards luncheon in Atlanta as the state's junior co-player of the year. He won the Georgia PGA Junior Boys' Championship. Brandon Cho of Suwanee shared the award as the youngest winner ever of the Georgia Junior Championship.
