Area Sports Notes: Grimes' record 10 3-pointers lead Lady Scots to victory

Emma Grimes set a program record with 10 made 3-point baskets Tuesday night. and her 32 points led Covenant College to a 79-65 USA South women's basketball win over visiting LaGrange. Grimes missed only three 3 tries and was 11-of-15 from the field overall, and Bekah Walter supported her with 7-of-10 shooting and 19 points. Jessica Bell had seven assists and four steals for the Lady Scots (7-11, 3-6), and Joanna Smith had 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals. Lauren Johnson led LaGrange (7-9, 1-6) with 21 points, six assists and six steals, and Marilauren Farr had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

' Tennessee Wesleyan's Hunter Simpson is the Appalachian Athletic Conference women's basketball player of the week for the third time this season and the second week in a row. The junior from Madisonville, Tenn., averaged 25 points and 11.5 rebounds in two wins last weeek, with 28 and 13 against Brenau, and totaled 11 assists and five steals. In surpassing 500 rebounds for her TWU career, she became only the third player in Lady Bulldogs history with more than 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 assists.

» Cleveland State's Tevin Olison scored 22 points and Delaino Walker had 20 points and nine rebounds in the Cougars' 75-73 TCCAA makeup win Monday night against the Walters State Senators. Victor Curry and Darius Turman added 14 and 10 points with five and seven rebounds for the host Cougars (9-7, 5-4), and Cam Copeland had eight assists. The game included 17 lead changes and 14 ties. Julia Gaither led the Lady Cougars with 12 points in their 74-46 loss to the first-place Lady Senators.

Swimming

» The Sewanee men's swimming and diving team won the final three events in last Saturday's meet at Rhodes - the 200-yard breaststroke, the 400 freestyle relay and the 1650 freestyle - for a 103-101 victory over the Lynx. The Rhodes women beat Sewanee 135-57. Freshman Lee Haber, who already had won the 200 individual medley, began the Tigers' closing surge with the 200 breast win and a leg in the relay with Owen Pearson, Andrew Freibert and Robert Coles, and James Hoyt then won the 1650 by 28 seconds. Hoyt earlier was second in the 200 butterfly and joined 200 backstroke victor Carl Failing, Kipling Kilmas and Jacob Finco in winning the 400 medley relay. Freibert and Coles were first and second in the 50 free, and Freibert and Finco were second and third in the 100 free. Sewanee's Meghan Mulhern won the women's 500 free by 17 seconds and was second in the 200 free, and teammates Adelle Dennis, Jenny Norenberg, Isabel Kirby and Kate del Balzo won the 400 free relay. Del Balzo was second in the 200 butterfly.

Baseball/Softball

» The annual fundraising pancake breakfast for the Chattanooga State baseball team also includes the softball program this year, and it will be held Saturday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. in the school cafeteria. The cost is $5 per person, and that may be paid at the door or tickets bought in advance. For more information call 697-2418 or 697-2415. The baseball Tigers open their season Feb. 2-3 at Emerson, Ga., with three games against Georgia Highlands. The Lady Tigers start their season that same weekend in Panama City, Fla., and Tallahassee, with seven games Friday through Sunday.

» Chattanooga's Athletic Shop/King's Men slowpitch team finished fourth out of 10 teams in the open division of the Premier Softball Association Winter World Series this past weekend in Dalton, Ga. The King's Men were the only area team in the division, and they went 2-2 with every game decided by four or fewer runs. Kelby Rhea went 13-for-14 (.929) with two home runs in the tournament, and player-manager Garrett Reagan was 9-for-13 with two homers also. Swade Mooney and Stephen Graham each went 9-for-14, Mooney with three homers and Graham with the winning hit against Power Softball of Macon, and Ray Pollard was 8-for-13 with a homer.
