Girls Preparatory School senior Maddox Bandy received the statewide female Junior Sportsmanship Award at the USTA Tennessee annual awards luncheon Saturday in Nashville, and her mother, former GPS star Meg Glass Bandy, was honored as the state professional of the year. The two won the national mother-daughter clay-courts championship in October in Naples, Fla. Another GPS alumna, Cindy Kemp Battle, also was honored Saturday with induction into the Tennessee Tennis Hall of Fame. The sportsmanship award recognizes "leadership, civic responsibility and character while maintaining a competitive spirit," according to a school release. "Maddox has been a prominent player on the junior circuit in the Southern section," GPS coach Sue Bartlett said in the release, "and her high level of play has led GPS to many important singles and doubles wins, including her two TSSAA individual state doubles championships. I am very proud a GPS tennis player was chosen for this honor by the USTA."
