The 21st Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Classic softball event will take place Tuesday at Frost Stadium. The doubleheader involving more than 40 recent area high school graduates is set to start at 6 p.m. The Tennessee team will be coached by Tim Couch, who last month guided Silverdale Baptist Academy to its first TSSAA state championship in any sport. The Georgia team is headed by Dana Mull, who has led Gordon Lee to multiple GHSA state titles, including the past three years. The Tennessee roster features four Southeastern Conference signees: Ooltewah's Kayla Boseman (Mississippi State), Baylor's Cheyenne Lindsey (Florida), SBA's Kaili Phillips and Meigs County's Ashley Rogers (both Tennessee). Among Georgia's NCAA Division I signees are Gordon Lee's Faith Alexander (Kennesaw State), Canaan Burnett (Stetson) and Gracey Kruze (University of Tennessee at Chattanooga). Admission is $8, $4 for children 6-12, free for ages 5 and younger. All proceeds from this year's event will go to help with medical expenses for the family of the late Marvin "Stump" Martin, who was instrumental in starting all the Tennessee-Georgia all-star sports series.
* The 375-team, eight-complex Scenic City Showcase for girls' fastpitch softball last weekend was featured Tuesday on extrainningsoftball.com. The website reported on the three age groups - 18-, 16- and 14-under - in the event started in 2009 by Jeremy and Jill Higdon and pointed out that it was on the first recruiting weekend of the summer season with no apparent effect from new NCAA recruiting rules. In a statement passed along by Jill Higdon, Chattanooga Sports Committee president Tim Morgan said: "It was fun last weekend listening to local restaurants and attractions describe the high levels of 'patrons with ponytails' filling their tables and walking through their turnstiles. This is an amazing annual event that brings in over 10,000 visitors spending more than 3 million dollars of estimated economic impact over one weekend in our community."

* Friday's 4-and-2 championship win for the Chattanooga duo of John Williams and Neil Spitalny in the Tennessee Super Senior Four-Ball at Montgomery Bell State Park was clinched by a Williams hole-and-one on No. 16. And Dan Schorsten of Hendersonville followed a few minutes later with an ace on the same hole on the way to a 1-up Senior Four-Ball win. Schorsten's ace made him and partner Bjorn Svedin all square. The shotmakers did not see their 188-yarders fall in the cup. "It was awesome, just awesome," Williams said in a Tennessee Golf Association release. "I can't see well enough to see it go in. I couldn't believe it." Spitalny, who with Williams won the same title last year at Loudon, said his partner's walk-off shot was "a laser" and added, "We yelled up to the guys on the green, and they told us. I've never seen a tournament end with a hole-in-one." Spitalny won the Tennessee Senior Amateur in 2015 and the Super Senior Amateur in 2016 and 2017 as an individual in addition to the last two Super Senior Four-Balls. On Friday he sank a 40-yard birdie putt on No. 13 between two birdie putts by Williams for a 3-up lead through 14 holes. Williams said the two are "great friends, and it's a pleasure playing with him. It's always comforting when you have a partner like Neil, who you know is always in the hole. It works out well for me because I can hit some squirrelly shots. I can relax and play, and that seems to work well."
* Gavin Noble from Ringgold, Georgia, tied for second at 5-under-par 211 in the Southern Golf Association's 46th Southern Junior Championship, which ended Friday in Choudrant, Louisiana. Charlie Flynn of Shreveport closed with a 68 at Squire Creek Country Club and won at 209. Cole Sherwood from Austin, Texas, also shot a 68 and was at 211 with Noble, who ended with a 69. The tournament started with 85 players.
Cycling
* Chattanooga's Durward Higgins raced to his second gold medal in as many tries in the 2018 USA Cycling Masters Nationals with a one-second win in the 75-79 age-group road race Friday in Augusta, Georgia. He won the age group's time trial Thursday and will go 3-for-3 for the second year in a row if he wins the downtown criterium today.

* Drag racing Saturday at Brainerd Motorsports Park was called off because of the heat.
General
* Mississippi State University alumni and fans, as well as anyone else who wants to hear MSU women's basketball coach Vic Schaefer speak can do so Tuesday at Christ United Methodist Church on East Brainerd Road. The MSU area alumni dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $40 at the door. Schaefer's team has gone 71-7 with two NCAA runner-up finishes the past two seasons.
