Area Sports Notes: Kim Riley's tennis team wins Southern Sectional title

Captain Kim Riley and her Chattanooga team won the 18-over women's 7.5 championship at the USTA Southern Sectional combo doubles tournament last weekend at Mobile, Ala., and a Dalton team headed by Lee Charles was the 18-over 7.5 men's runner-up. The nine-state event crowned seven 40-over team champions as well as 11 in the 18-over men's and women's categories. Riley's team went 4-0 in its flight and won 3-0 in the finals against a Hattiesburg, Miss., group. Other team members are co-captain Laura Ketcham, Maria Gonzalez, Emily Brown, Kennisha Cann, Melissa Wofford, Serena Lau, Sherry Mason, Allyson Wurm, Meghan Gallups and Janey Remillard.

Golf

» The Dalton State men's golf team shattered the school's single-round record in winning by 23 strokes Monday and Tuesday at the Carey Collegiate Classic in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Roadrunners shot a 557 with a 19-under-par 269 in round two, when S.M. Lee carded a 64 for medalist at 136. Ben Rebne (68) and P.J. Shields (67) also made the top five at 139 and 140, while Dalton Johnson (70) was seventh at 142 and Sport Allmond was 12th at 145. Lee on Wednesday became the first NAIA golfer named to the U.S. team for the Arnold Palmer Cup.

» Tennessee Tech senior Alexander Riddle from Notre Dame High joined teammate Matthew Giles on the all-tournament team Tuesday at UT-Martin's Grover Page Classic at Jackson, Tenn. Riddle was fourth at 217, playing as an individual. TTU freshman Bracton Womack from McMinnville tied for fifth at 218 for the third-place Golden Eagles.

Softball

» Madison Tidmore went 4-for-4 with six stolen bases, an RBI and four runs scored in the first game and then 2-for-3 with a walk, two steals, two runs and two RBIs as Chattanooga State beat visiting Kishwaukee 11-0 and 13-2 in five-inning softball games Wednesday. Kayla Woody was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the opener, when Jenna Edwards, Madalyn Eddie and Abby Hicks combined to pitch the shutout for the Lady Tigers (18-8). Kaleigh Wynne, Morgan Marshall and Hicks pitched the second game, and Shelby Penning was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs.

» Kishwaukee lost 16-1 and 1-0 Tuesday at Cleveland State, which got a five-inning two-hitter with 11 strikeouts in Shiann Stockwell's eighth win and a combined one-hit shutout from Bekah Copas and Kaitlyn Pickens. Macy Bryant was 4-for-4 with a three-run homer and a two-run double in game one and singled in the game-two run. Also in the opener, Baylee Woods homered and plated three and Cortney Mooneyham had two hits and two RBIs.

» Lee University lost 6-4 in 10 innings and won 6-2 against visiting King. Brooklynn Frazier had a homer and a sacrifice fly and Taylor Moran a two-run single in game one, and Frazier had a two-run single and Moran a two-run homer in 13-14 Lee's six-run fifth inning in game two. Lily Hatcher and Kayla Gooch each had two hits and scored a run and Erika Greek allowed six hits with seven strikeouts in six innings.

Basketball

» Tennessee Wesleyan's Gina Dick and Hunter Simpson are Scholar-Athletes for NAIA Division II women's basketball, along with Bryan senior Marlee Sells and juniors Amber Levi and Tonesha Allison, and TWU junior Bryson Baker from Decatur is a men's honoree. The honor requires a cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Dick is a junior from Crossville, Simpson a senior from Madisonville. Levi is from Dayton.

Lacrosse

» Reinhardt (6-1) pulled out a 17-16 women's lacrosse win Wednesday against visiting Lee (5-5), which got five goals from Emma Hill, three from Brianne Schapira and two plus eight ground balls from Madeline Perrigo.

Track & Field

» Sewanee senior Tricia Murphy was named the SAA women's track athlete of the week for her eighth- and 12th-place finishes in the 1500- and 800-meter runs last weekend in the Southern Invitational. She set personal bests in both.
