Area Sports Notes: Lee's Josiah Brooks earns national track and field honor

Lee University junior Josiah Brooks is the coaches association's national track and field athlete of the week for NCAA Division II after his showing last weekend in Georgia Tech's Yellow Jacket Invitational meet. His 200-meter dash time and triple jump distance were the best in Division II so far this outdoor season, and he surpassed national-meet provisional qualifying standards in those and the 100. His 100 and 200 times are Lee records.

Golf

» The Dalton State College men's golfers shot a 284 on Tuesday and finished fourth at 831 for 54 holes in the Battle at Primm (Nev.). S.M. Lee shot his third consecutive 66 and was third individually, while fellow All-American P.J. Shields tied for 26th and Ben Rebne and Dalton Johnson tied for 31st and 33rd. Also Tuesday, Lee repeated as the Southern States Athletic Conference golfer of the week, having been the medalist at 136 for 36 holes as the Roadrunners won the Carey Collegiate Classic.

» Dalton State's women golfers climbed to fifth behind four NCAA Division I teams at 934 in the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate hosted by Tennessee Tech in Sevierville. The field included seven D-I schools, Division II Carson-Newman and DSC from the NAIA. The Lady Roadrunners' Tia Teiniketo finished ninth individually with Isabel Rijos tied for 16th and Heather Nail 22nd.

» In the men's Bobby Nichols at Sevierville, Tennessee Tech senior Alexander Riddle from Notre Dame High School followed a 68 Monday with a 79 and tied for 31st at 221 while the Golden Eagles finished sixth as a team.

Soccer

» Baylor School senior midfielder Eemeli Makela from Finland has signed scholarship papers to continue his soccer career in the area at Lee University. Baylor had a celebration of his signing Tuesday evening. Makela, a Best of Preps first-team selection last spring in his first year in Chattanooga, had talks with Belmont, East Tennessee State, Carson-Newman and Sewanee before deciding on Lee and second-year coach Derek Potteiger. "I've been there twice and felt like part of the team. Everyone was super nice," said Makela, who sat in on a marketing class. He also praised the campus and the athletic facilities and said the soccer coaches have the Flames in good position for progress. His Baylor experience has been "super awesome," he said. "He's been really, really good for us," Baylor coach Curtis Blair said. "He's a great kid - great in the dorm, great on the soccer team, great for the community. As a player he's going to get better and better, and Lee's going to benefit from that."

Tennis

» Sewaneee senior Clementina Davila and freshmen Jack Metzger were chosen the Southern Athletic Association tennis players of the week. Davila, ranked 38th in singles by the ITA, defeated the nation's 10th-ranked player from Amherst and an opponent from fifth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer and lost only to the No. 3-ranked player, representing No. 3 team Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Davila is 10-3 in singles in 2018. Metzger is 7-3 after taking three straight-sets singles wins last week and also prevailing 9-7 with Fletcher Kerr against a duo from 12th-ranked Whitman.

Softball

» Kayley Caplinger totaled six hits, four RBIs and three runs scored and got the first pitching win as visiting Cumberland rose to 20-3 by defeating Bryan 11-5 and 8-6 in NAIA softball Tuesday. Courtney Petty had a two-run double and Hannah O'Shields was 2-for-4 in the first game for Bryan (8-20), and Petty was 3-for-4 and scored twice and Kimberly McKernie had a two-run single in game two.
