Area Sports Notes: Chattanooga Chattanooga Football Club, Asheville City SC finish tied

The Chattanooga Football Club played Asheville City Soccer Club to a 1-1 draw Wednesday night at Finley Stadium. Both goals came in the second half, with Charlie Clarke scoring for CFC and Jamie Smith converting for Asheville City SC by cleaning up a corner kick with his header. CFC (1-0-1) is at home again Saturday, taking on the New Orleans Jesters at 7:30 p.m.

» The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga announced Wednesday the addition of Hollie Massey from England to the women's soccer team. She is the Mocs' seventh signee for 2018. Massey attended Congleton High School in Cheshire and earned call-ups to the England U-15 and England Colleges U-18 teams during her club soccer career, which included time with Crewe Alexandra, Manchester United and most recently Everton. She also was in the Boalloy Running Club. "Hollie is a dynamic central midfielder who possesses a ton of quality," UTC coach Gavin McKinney said in the announcement release. "Her ability to play out of pressure paired with her excellent range of passing will allow her to compete at a very high level. Hollie has all of the tools to dictate matches. She had played at the highest of standards throughout her youth career. To add a player with her background and ability is fantastic for our program."

» Amateur Joey Savoie, a former Middle Tennessee State golfer from Quebec, shot a 65 and led the 70th annual Franklin American Mortgage Tennessee Open at 9-under-par 135 after the second round Wednesday at The Grove in College Grove. Another amateur, Lipscomb's Eric Ansett, shot 64 and was tied with Stoney Crouch for second at 138. Bryce Ledford, the 2009 State Open champion from Chattanooga - he played for McCallie and UTC - was in a three-way tie for fourth at 139 after being one of the five leaders with 69s Tuesday. Another ex-Moc, Stuart Thomas, was tied for 10th at 142, one shot ahead of Ooltewah resident Gibby Gilbert III and former Rhea County standout Hunter Green.

» No. 2-ranked Dalton State College jumped up 11 places to eighth Wednesday with a 310 (total 639) in the NAIA women's national golf tournament at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. SCAD Savannah still led at 606. DSC's Tia Teiniketo was tied for 12th individually at 154 after a second-day 74, and Katie Dalton shot 73 and shared 33rd at 158.

Softball

» Lee University sophomore first baseman Taylor Moran from Silverdale Baptist Academy was selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II All-America third team for 2018, and University of North Georgia senior catcher Shelby Hammontree from Heritage High School in Catoosa County received All-America honorable mention from the Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association (D2CCA). No. 1-ranked North Georgia opens play this morning in the national tournament in Salem, Virginia. Moran batted .448 this year with 13 home runs, 12 doubles, two triples, 34 walks, 42 runs scored and 62 batted in. She also stolen seven bases in eight tries.

» The King's Men slowpitch team based at Lookout Valley Baptist Church wound up 13-1 in its Chattanooga Sports League season with its fifth Church League championship in as many years. After a 30-20 semifinal win over Clear Creek Church of Christ, the King's Men defeated Brothers in Christ 26-11 on Monday for the title. The King's Men, sponsored by Rex Elmore Jr. with Garrett Reagan as player-manager and Danny Stancil as a coach, are 81-8 in church-league play since 2014. Brothers in Christ, managed by Rocky Dennison, wound up 10-4, and regular-season runner-up Rehoboth Baptist finished 10-3 under manager Dan Newsom. Clear Creek, managed by David Gray, went 9-5.
