Gang, hope you are enjoying the weather, the fun and the Masters. Giddy-up.
From the Augusta, Ga.-satellite offices of the "Talks too much" studios, we believe that children are the future - teach them well and let them lead the way.
Jay, do you see hypocrisy with the Paul Finebaums the Dick Viatles and the Jay Bilas of the world who continue to preach that the NCAA and colleges are taking advantage of athletes by not giving athletes money and yet these kind of guys wouldnt be making the millions they make if not for college athletics, Would a Jay Bilas be willing to share in his personal revenue with college athletes, not they he should, but he should quit pointing fingers and throwing stones while living in an expensive glass house. Your thoughts?
I see you point, but the bigger question is the coaches and administrators.
Bilas and the talking heads you mentioned are paid to offer their opinion on college sports.
Those opinions - Bilas believes the NCAA is a sham; Vitale is a shill for it when it comes to college hoops - are not paid for by the NCAA, they are paid for by ESPN.
However, the connection between networks that pay huge money for coverage rights and the leagues they 'cover' is a major point of contention in my view, especially moving forward as the leagues and conferences continue to brand their own networks.
Man you got the best job in the world. Thanks for all the updates from the Masters.
I don't really have a big question, but I was wondering what five things are you looking for this weekend?
Thanks for the email and the feedback.
Yes, we have a pretty nice gig for sure and are truly blessed to work with some great folks at the TFP and on Press Row from 3-6 on ESPN 105.1 FM. We are even more blessed to have found a wonderful wife and family who puts up with my awesome job that consumes a bunch of my time. War Mrs. 5-at-10.
This weekend, well, we're excited to see the following:
Can Rory win? He will a Masters at some point - he's too good not too - will this be that point.
Can Adam Scott join the inner circle of Masters elite? Scott shot 69 Thursday and is one off the lead. There have been three back-to-back champs - Nicklaus, Faldo, Woods - and those three guys were pretty good.
How will Harris handle today? The former Baylor School star (sorry BiB) is at 1 over. Making the cut in your first Masters is a fine goal, and from there anything is possible. But getting to the weekend is step one.
Can Freddie Couples still be Freddie Couples? (Side note: What's our Rushmore of Freddies? Couples, Freeman, Krueger and ????)
Who's going to make a move? Someone buried beyond the first page of the leaderboard will make a move today. Who will it be? We'll talk about it at the Masters on the 10s on 105.1 FM today with our man Paschall. We'll also update timesfreepress.com and on The Twitter at @jgreesontfp and TFP golf ace David Uchiyama will be tweeting along at @UchiyamaCTFP
From tcase08 and a slew of others from various forms...
Summarized: Is it too early to be worried about the Braves?
Yes. And no.
Tcase asked about the balance of the rotation with the addition of Santana. (And there's nothing like an eight-inning gem in your Braves debut like Santana authored to help smooth the transition, right?) Others wondered about the bats.
This bunch is going to be confounding and comforting. It will be an equal balance of good and bad, hair-pulling and high-fiving.
Except for Danny Struggla of course. We know what we're going to get from him, right?
From an orange crew
Who do you believe will be the Vols starting QB?
We will get Downtown Patrick Brown to wade into this as well.
We believe it's going to be Riley Ferguson, and that has nothing to do with any results from this spring.
We believe Riley Ferguson's absence from the debacle that was the QB scene last year gives him a chance to start quicker. There is residue for Riley.
It will be interesting to see how the four - Fegruson, Worley, Dobbs and Peterman - do Saturday.
Jay, I want to thank you for the 5-at-10 and for your radio show -- it's awesome.
I know you are at Augusta, so let's ask two golf questions: What was your favorite Masters moment? What's your Rushmore of golf movies?
And tell David he can use that Rushmore Friday if he needs one.
Thanks and keep up the great work.
Thanks for the kind words and the check's in the mail.
We have had a slew of sports movies Rushmores of late, and the winner of our overall sports movie madness bracket on Press Row was Caddyshack. So we'll go Caddyshack, The Greatest Game Ever Played, Happy Gilmore and Tin Cup.
As for favorite Masters moment that we have seen live here, well, other than the two times we have been blessed to play it, there have been a slew of great moments.
Staying in Rushmore form with the moments that have happened since we started coming here in 2003, well here are our four (and feel free to share yours gang):
- Tiger's chip in on 16 in 2005
- Mickelson's birdie on the 72nd hole in 2004 for his first major
- Bubba from the pine straw in the playoff 2012
- And while we could put Rory going Obama left on No. 10 a few years ago or Louis Oosthuizen from Ooltewah, we'll go with Mickelson being Mickelson bewteen the trees from the pine straw on 13 in 2010.
Great question. Great stuff. Thanks for playing along.
