It's Monday and the rain's coming.

Who won the weekend? Who lost it?

From the "Talks too much" studios, set your phasers for stun.

photo Jordan Spieth speaks to the media after winning the Masters golf tournament Sunday, April 12, 2015, in Augusta, Ga.

Weekend winners

Jordan Spieth. The 21-year-old Texan was pure from start to finish at Augusta, making the most of his chances and capitalizing on every opportunity. He withstood every shot from all comers and handled the pressure like an old pro. The age of Spieth is at hand.

Golf, kind of. The Spieth-Rory McIlroy rivalry could be a good one. It has the makings to be quite special. American vs. Euorpean. Under Armour vs. Nike. They are both very likable. The question remains can they chase greatness with the nine-figure spoils of golf excellence already in hand.

Pete, the 5-at-10 reader who won the Masterfully Mastering the Masters Challenge. He was victorious with an awesome entry of Spieth, Justin Rose, Paul Casey and Dustin Johnson. That's a total of 15 and this year a nine would have been perfect. Speaking of perfect entries, some cat under the handle BrettMarino apparently won $1 million on DraftKings fantasy golf challenge for a perfect Masters entry. Yes, dude won more than every golfer other than Spieth this weekend.

The Braves. A 5-1 start after Sunday's loss defies words for a team that is already more games over .500 than most would have expected all year.

College football viewers. According to this report, Lou Holtz has left ESPN and it looks like with Rece Davis moving to host GameDay and Holtz out, they will retool the college football studio coverage. This is big.

Weekend losers

Golf, kind of. It's marquee event came and went with a runaway winner and little-to-no drama. It will be interesting to see what the TV numbers will be for this Masters, but it was a forgettable Sunday for most of the golf world not connected to the Spieth family.

The NBA. We understand the decision to and the reasons for resting players, like the Cavs did in a humbling 117-78 loss to Boston. That said, it's a tough matter for fans who are paying record-prices for a substandard product.

The Disney racing experience. Sadly, there was a death at the Disney racing attraction this weekend. Here's the story, and as someone who has ridden in a Richard Petty Racing Experience car, well, that's a tragedy. Not sure if that type of ride/attraction will survive this, you know?

The Western Conference teams not named Spurs. OK, we knew a team with a championship pedigree like San Antonio would be ready, but dear buckets of excellence, the Spurs are charging. Winners of 11 straight, the Spurs now are the 2 seed in the West. If we offered you Spurs-Cavs or every other matchup in the NBA Finals, whatcha got?

UTC hires McCall

UTC athletic director David Blackburn hired Matt McCall, the former University of Florida assistant, as the Mocs next basketball coach.

McCall has a nice list of supporters who have a litany of nice things to say about the 33-year-old who worked himself up from former basketball manager to now a head college basketball coach.

That's well and good, and in truth, working on Billy Donovan's staff certainly is a strong statement and a place where a guy can't help but learn a ton about the game. We're sure his credentials are top-notch.

We are behind this hire, however, because David Blackburn has earned the benefit of the doubt in these matters. He has yet to make even a mediocre hire to this point, nevermind a bad one. He is 3-for-3 with three extra base hits, so we have trust in that.

Wes Long would have been an easy choice. Continue the momentum with a team that is poised for big things. We supported Long, and believed he would have been good here.

But easy and right are not always the same the thing, and Blackburn hired McCall.

The reasons for that decision is not known yet, but the guy making the decision has proven more than capable of getting it right.

Now McCall faces the challenge of winning over an experienced roster that was vested and connected to the previous regime - another reason why hiring Long would have been easy - as soon as possible.

This collection of talent - both on campus and in the recruiting cycle - could mean special things for a UTC program that stands at the cusp of being a SoCon power.

Was the two-year tenure of Will Wade a blip or a renaissance?

That question will be answered by McCall in the next winter or two.

And we are comfortable with that because Blackburn is comfortable with it.

This and that

- After we talked about it last week, here's more on the Danny Ferry situation in the ATL. Apparently the Hawks nominated coach Mike Budenholzer as executive of the year in Ferry's absence.

- We liked this story. Former UAB players got together for a flag football game. Good for them.

- Alex Rodriguez could have made the weekend winners, but he's A-Rod, so there's that. Still, we need to mention he is hitting .300 with six RBIs in six games. At this pace, well, you know - 162 RBIs at all - he would be the clear favorite for comeback player of the year.

Today's question

OK, who won the weekend and who lost it?

You know the drill.

OK, we'll start with over/under 5 for Jordan Spieth majors, whatcha got?

Go and thanks for playing the Masters challenge. Up next the Feeling the NFL Draft Challenge.
