Who golfs? Chattanooga educator Arnold

Mark Arnold.

Mark Arnold "retired" from golf about 15 years ago when his first child was born.

Now that his eldest is driving and his youngest is heading into eighth grade, the Chattanoga educator decided to pick up the old hobby earlier this summer.

"I went into buy new clubs and made sure to bring my checkbook," Arnold joked, with Nikent irons and a TaylorMade driver in his new blue bag. "I noticed that the head on my old driver was about the size of a baseball. This thing is the size of a softball."

Despite his new equipment, Arnold said, his game is about the same as the old days when he played twice a week. He crowed about shooting an 81 on Monday and gets out regularly on Tuesdays and at least one other time a week after unretiring.

"I thought about other things to do, but I'm probably not a very good tri-athlete," he said. "And I really enjoy golf and find it challenging. I hit some right, some left and some down the middle."

And he occasionally still gets time with his children while playing the game. Emily, the eighth-grader, rode as a passenger Tuesday. She took a few lessons but didn't take to the game.

But there's still time. He dad barely played during her lifetime.
